So a bloke was having his morning run, when he stumble across a pack of what appeared to be bears. There were loads of them, and the man -- being a Muggle, and someone who couldn't use magic -- was a bit defenseless. So he ran back down the path to find his friend, to tell him about the bears, and that something needed to be done! His friend, a wizard and generally unflappable, walked down the path to stare down the bears, decided they weren't much of a threat at all, and let them be.

Oh, without doubt! I'm sure you lot have got loads of ways to defend yourselves. I've seen films.

But for knowledge's sake --

How would a non-magical person slay a troublesome beast?

[ it's a serious question ]

It depends what weapon you prefer. I use a sword, but others in my acquaintance use a bow and arrow, battle axes, maces... It depends on the creature you want to kill and how many people are in your party, too. If you have a company of archers fighting a gryphon, for instance, they might down it before it has a chance to reach them. However, a lone warrior might want to equip a sword to fight one instead of a bow and arrow.

That is a gryphon. And yes, I have, but that's beside the point - I'm afraid I don't understand the point of your bear story. Would you explain it to me?

There's no point, I was just messing about with the new emoticons that I found at the datary and a bear was the easiest thing I could make a bunch of.

And come now, you can't leave me like that -- that looks a bit like a hippocriff, but they've got feathers on their heads. Most wizards would just leave them alone. That's pretty amazing that you managed to do that without magic -- brilliant, really.

If leaving them alone were possible, I'd certainly prefer to do so. I'm afraid by the time they see you, you have little choice but fight them, so it's not such an extraordinary feat so much as a necessary one. Still, thank you.

These hippogriffs, were they common in your world? And they were docile enough that they would leave you be if you did the same?

Common enough, I suppose, but they're proud creatures. If you disrespect them or tick them off, they'll properly rip your arm off. But I've never had an issue with them, whenever I've run into one.
