[ For all intents and purposes, Alistair feels utterly alone. Sure, there are several people in the fleet who know him, but he doesn't seem to know any of them, and so it's weird. And if he's being honest with himself, he was feeling pretty lonely well before he got here. All of the friends he made during the Blight, when they were all on the road together, pretty much left after it ended, after his coronation. Even Amell ran off somewhere with Leliana, leaving him to the tender mercies of his uncle, his late brother's widow, and the rest of the Fereldan nobility.

He's been keeping up a cheerful face - he doesn't really know how to do anything else - but what with being here, learning about things he probably shouldn't have learned about, and having a little bit of money from - somewhere, he's finally just. Showed up to the bar. Varric's is the closest thing to familiar he can find, so he's drinking whatever ale his money can buy. And he's not stopping until the money runs out or he is insensible on the floor. ]

Ah-- no. I've been lucky on that count, but I know a bunch of people in the same situation. [She peers at him curiously as she upturns a couple of newly washed glasses.] I've found one person who knew me from somewhere else, but he doesn't talk much.

You've got a lot of people from home here? Or a lot of people from some mystery prison you can't remember?

They're from my world, but I don't know any of them. They all know who I am, though.

[ And this is apparently enough to drive him to drink. ]

...you must be known for something pretty out there, then.

[That's a can of worms. From her experience in these places it could be something he hasn't even done yet, and that's always a pain in the ass.]

Are you famous or infamous?

Some of them are from the future, I guess. And some of them might be from... my world but different? I dunno, it's all giving me a headache.

[ He swirls the beer around in his mug with a sigh. ]

I'm a king.

Oh, that'll do it. [She winces. If she hadn't met a succession of royalty at home by now, she'd probably have less of a casual reaction, but as it is Nami just kind of feels sorry for him.]

This place tends to drag people in from all over. Before your time, after your time... there's a little girl here who's ten years before me. It doesn't bother me, but being a king sounds all kind of complicated when it comes to that.

Do they think you're a good king, at least?

Uh... I dunno. I haven't asked?

[ Oh, geez, what if they all think he's terrible?!?! ]

[She grins and moves to comply, voice sailing over her shoulder in an easy tone.]

I wouldn't worry too much, I guess. If you were a bad king, they'd find ways to show you.

You... think? I mean, I guess it says something that no one's tried to kill me, yet, but...

You don't have any power here, right? [She pours another ale, gently sliding it over to his fingers.] If they're still treating you like a king, that must mean they respect you as a king. Generally a good sign.

That's... a good point, actually. Not that I want them to treat me like a king, I mean, I'd rather they just treat me like Alistair. Regular old Alistair.

Have you told them that? [She grins lazily. And pours herself a drink actually, shh.] How many people are we talking here, anyway?

Well, yes, I have been. Some of them don't seem to have gotten the hint, completely.

[ He scratches his head in thought. ] Maybe... five or six?

...that's a lot of people all from one place. Especially when you don't know each other, either. [Curious.] Are any of the rest nobility?

[theirinurpants]

I don't know. Probably not. I mean, one's an elf, I don't know if elves even have nobility. Riona is a Cousland, so she is, but... what does that matter?

Maybe it doesn't matter at all. It's just when people turn up in these places from the same world, they tend to know each other or be connected in some fashion.

You're the first person I've come across that doesn't know who the others are.

Really? Strange.

I mean, Riona - well, it's weird. She knows me, but I don't know her. It's like we're from the same world, but different... versions?

...oh. That's certainly happened before. [Maybe that's it. Complicated and awkward.] Not often, but it does.

I guess you know the Couslands in your world, but not a Riona Cousland?

I mean, I know of the Couslands. Everyone in Ferelden does, they're older even than the royal line. Never met one personally though, until I showed up here.

Does she actually know you, or just know you're the king?

Yes, she knows me. She says we're friends in her world, that she's also a Grey Warden.

[namisan]

But that's news to you. [Weird.] What's a Grey Warden?

[theirinurpants]

Grey Wardens are warriors who fight darkspawn and protect the lands of Thedas from the Blight. Darkspawn are a sort of evil creature - they destroy everything they touch. The Grey Wardens exist to protect people from them.

Sounds like a fun place. [...ahaha. Not. Does sound kind of familiar, though.] So are the Grey Wardens well known, or are they a more secretive kind of order?

[theirinurpants]

Very well-known. Legendary, even. I doubt we'd get many recruits if people didn't know about them.

[namisan]

Well, even their secretive orders get their recruits from somewhere, even if they just scout them out one by one. But I'm glad something like that exists in your world. Do they get involved in politics at all?
