Who: Misty and all you revelers
Broadcast: Fleetwide Video
Action: The FS Starlight
When: All night long!!! It's Mardi Gras!!!

[Aww everyone look at this cute hippie girl with her sweet southern drawl not having a mental breakdown like the last time most of you would have seen her. She's also got a more festive get up on: a shiny gold bodice fits over her flowing black dress, bright purple and green scarves drape around her shoulders, and a jaunty top hat sits on her head. Grinning from ear to ear, she addresses the fleet:]

Hey y'all this is Misty! I don't know how much or what folks here know about Earth holidays and all that, but today's a big one where I come from: Mardi Gras. It's like... this big feast day right before a period of fastin' in preparation for Easter. It won't be the same without the parades and the costumes and the food - ain't got no gumbo in space apparently - but I found this sweet club called that plays some pretty good jazz and I sure would appreciate some company if y'all are interested in a little fun!

[After giving the location of the club and what time she'll meet you there, she picks up a glass full of what looks like beer and tilts it in the direction of her audience.]

Laissez les bons temps rouler!

[Let the good times roll, and feel free to use this as a mingle post if you like!]

I'm not sure. [shrug] I wouldn't lead the service, since I'm way too Muslim for that kind of thing.

That would depend on whoever would bless the bread and wine - or juice, in this case.

Unfortunately, no - I'm the closest we've got, and I'm more comfortable with Islamic tradition. [Which makes sense, considering that he's a practicing Muslim.]

If you wouldn't mind, I'd be okay with it? I don't think anyone would object, but I'll see if they would offer help too.

Hey, it's seriously the least I can do. [Though now he's going through a mental checklist of who could feasibly help him with this.] Interfaith's for everyone, and well... Ash Wednesday is kind of a big thing, right?

I figure, it'll be good practice for whenever I get back.

[he nods] When I was in college, I worked in interfaith ministry. Usually, we'd have enough people so that Christians organized Easter and Muslims organized Eid, but we'd all cooperate on dinners and celebrations and stuff.

I'd appreciate that.

[He means it too. Last year, he'd observed Ramadan - and Eid Al-Fitr - with his crew, but it wasn't quite the same.]

There are only two major holidays in Islam, Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha. The first Eid happens after Ramadan, or the month of fasting. The second is... well, do you remember the story of Prophet Abraham and the ram? It's all about that, and sacrificing an animal in honor of that story.
stefanged: (sure about that?)

Right. In Islam, it was ʾIsmāʿīl, peace be upon him, but the story's the same.

[His expression softens considerably. Now isn't the time to go into details.] It isn't until October, at the earliest, so don't worry. I'll figure something out when the time comes.

Huh? No, it's my fault for bringing it up. [Note to self: only mention Eid Al-Fitr from now on.]

Enjoy tonight, and text me when you're ready to begin services tomorrow. I'll try to be in the center for most of it.
