Does anything rhyme with silver? [somebody's finally trying his hand at writing poetry]

Also if anybody's seen the SS Huntress's welding torch, please let me know! It is a wreck in here, honestly. ...wait, maybe we don't have a welding torch.

[Sorey can be found half-buried in the guts of engineering, muttering words to himself as he tries to fit them into his rhyming scheme. Occasionally he'll crawl back out of the maintenance panel to write something in a grease-smudged notebook that contains...truly dire but very enthusiastic poetry.]

Chilver rhymes with silver, but I don't think that's really what you're looking for. [ She pauses, considering. ] I don't suppose half-rhymes would work?

Ohh, they could! If it matches up with what's before it. But what does 'chilver' mean?

It means a female lamb?

Ah- yeah no, I think if I likened the person this is describing to a lamb he might dump a bucket of icewater on my head. Thanks for the suggestion though, I might just reorder the sentence so it ends with something else.

Do you know if it's all right to change rhyming schemes in the middle of the poem? Or is that considered crass?

I did think it might not be entirely appropriate, but at least there was something there, right? I don't think it matters too much if the scheme changes - you're writing it yourself. That means more than something like that, especially to the person getting it.

Oh this isn't for any one person! This is for my personal records...maybe publication if it's good enough. [it isn't but he might be important enough for them to publish it anyway

As long as you have fun and you like it... That's all that matters, isn't it? It's for you, not anyone else.

That's true. Though...that's an interesting discussion. I'm not claiming to be so important as to call myself an artist, but do you think that a more famous artist has an obligation to make something compelling for their audience?

Maybe, but surely art, in any way, is an expression of the person making it? If you stop making things because you're feeling them or because they're an image in your head then surely you'd lose a part of something that makes you great?

Hmm...

You know, I usually don't do a lot of artistic things. Most of the time I study art that other people made, in an academic sense. This exercise is helping me see there's still a lot about its production that I don't understand, but you sound like you know what you're talking about.

I'm far more academic than I sound, really. It just seems like... If you want to share something that's a part of yourself then it ought to be a part of yourself, not something that you think other people might want. Does that make sense?

Yeah, that makes sense. But I'm also in something of a unique role back home? Documenting what I'm going through could be of a lot of use to future generations if someone else has to take up my mantle, so I want to make sure I leave behind something that they can understand.

But, I still have to do this for me. It's kind of making me stall a little bit in production.

That's true. I know for a fact having information about times something had happened before makes things so much easier, even if people think reading books is a ridiculous waste of time. [ She sighs. ] Maybe take a break and come back to it? You've got time here on the Fleet and on your ship, so maybe wander and see if that helps?

That's very true. Maybe I'll visit a few of the other ships, get a change of scenery.

But! I can't believe you know people who think it's a waste of time to read books! I mean, I have a couple friends who aren't into it as a pastime, but a waste? That doesn't make any sense.

[ Now she has to fight back her laugh because, oh, the stories she could tell. ]

I used to spend a lot of time in the library at school and they did think I was wasting my time. I'd like to think they learned better, though.

I hope so. You know, it's actually really interesting to hear about the differences toward libraries and books in general between different people. Where I'm from, books are pretty valuable and really are only collected by people with high social ranking, or for educational or religious institutes. Having a library is a pretty big deal. Is it the same for your world too?
