[sara promises lightly, picking up the jar to give it a look. swears and attitudes...she could feel her wallet getting lighter just looking at it -- if she had any money at all in the first place.]

I love donating to causes, but I'm broke.

[ see? she remembers you. good times. kate stands at ease, smiling. ] Don't worry about it. We all start off broke. And most of us aboard the Blameless are pretty freaking green. But it doesn't hurt to prepare for the future, right?

[that enthusiastic greeting gets a smile in return she can't help.]

No, it doesn't. I could go for some more privacy; I feel like I'm in college all over again.

[ or st. jude's. but kate won't wax poetic on boarding schools. ]

And I think that should really be priority the first. Right? Normal beds in our own rooms.

Right. Fresh food would be nice, but we won't starve to death with protein cubes.

[taste might not be great -- though she wouldn't say so if she knew kate were in charge of meals -- but it's practical.]

That depends entirely on the acumen of our cook. [ three two one wait for it. ] Hi, I'm our cook.

[amusement flickers across her face as she puts the jar down, shaking her hair out of her eyes.]

Looks like it's all up to you, Bishop. Just don't poison anyone, and we'll be fine.

Luckily for all of us, I'm not hopeless in the kitchen. [ she's not great (after all, she lived most of her life with a live-in chef of her own) but she's not terrible. ] Plus the job description comes with a handy-dandy augment. I know how these protein gels work. For better or worse.

Someone made sure we'd be prepared. That's convenient.

[she's noticed her own newfound knowledge of space, these ships, and the alien-made weapons aboard over the last few days, but she didn't know they could upload more normal information too.]

So how do they work? Do I want to know?

They're flavoured, [ she explains. ] And there are a bunch of different textures. Gels, cubes, powders -- with a little creativity, you can come up with some loose approximations of familiar dishes. They're not great, but they pass muster.

And there I thought all astronauts ate was freeze-dried ice cream and beef jerky. Just goes to show you: don't believe everything you see on TV.

I could really go for some freeze-dried ice cream right about now.

No one's selling regular ice cream down on the station?

[ladybro]

Sure they are. But freeze-dried just sounds so cool. I'd much prefer to be that kind of astronaut instead of -- [ a general finger-twirl in the direction of their circumstances. ]

Precisely. Not really where I expected my career to go, y'know?

So where did you expect it to go?

[ she's not eager to spill the superhero beans, so she falls back on something else she's good at: ] Somewhere cello-shaped, mostly.

Fancy. I was never any good at instruments.

[she took some of the obligatory classes as a kid, but none of it really stuck.]

Nah? [ kate shrugs. ] It's not for everyone, I suppose. Or if it was, life would get pretty noisy.

I don't think I'm ready for life to become a musical.

...I'll keep that in mind if the opportunity to buy a cello ever comes up. I'll ask myself, hey, would Sara really want to deal with Brahms at odd hours?
