The taint, and everything it brings with it.

[For right now, she has no tangible enemy, so to speak. Loghain was dead, the Archdemon was dead. She supposes "darkspawn" would also work, but they are of the taint, so it falls under that umbrella as well.]

Also, those who would bring harm to my country and its people.

What exactly is "the taint"?

it is a... plague, i suppose you could say. a relentless, lethal pestilence. it's said to be a punishment from the Maker for our sins. whether or not it's true, the taint is destructive. it kills all life it comes in contact with: people, animals, plant life. even water and soil are not safe from it. once the taint touches them, they are dead and life cannot spring from them anymore.

creatures of the taint call darkspawn live underground and occasionally make raids on the surface. as a grey warden, it is my duty to fight them and route them when i can.

Is there no way to stop the spread of this disease?

it's only spread through the darkspawn, so as long as they are stopped it is usually not too terrible an issue. it's when we're in a Blight that the problems start.

What is a Blight? A time when these creatures become stronger, or something else entirely?

not entirely inaccurate there. normally, darkspawn are mindless, attacking whatever is alive but not having any real strategy or goal in mind. when they're not attacking those on the surface, darkspawn ceaselessly dig for one of the remaining Old Gods: powerful dragons the ancient Tevinter Imperium used to worship. when they find one - it usually takes a few centuries before they do - they corrupt it with the taint and the dragon becomes an Archdemon. The archdemon can... bring together the darkspawn's minds, i guess. sort of gives them a hivemind or group-mind mentality. it can coordinate attacks and strategize. with an Archdemon leading them, the darkspawn arrive as a full-fledged army on the surface and attack, bent on nothing but destruction.

that's a Blight.

i have. the last one ended not quite a year ago for me. fortunately, it was the shortest one on record.

Do you believe such a thing could occur here? It seems there are a large number of factors that contribute to such an event.

no. there seem to be no darkspawn or any sign of the taint. i certainly haven't sensed any. i do not know if they exist on other worlds, but i certainly hope not.
