What is a detective...?

[She may have a lot of annoying questions I'm so sorry.]

A detective! One who solves mysterious crimes.

I see. You don't have soldiers or police in your time, or is there a special call for that kind of thing?

Oh, we definitely do- detectives are just part of the larger police force. They've all got specialties- murder, for instance. My fiance is a homicide detective, she chases murderers.

Ah-- I understand now. [Not such a new concept after all. They're just not called detectives where she's from.] And your specialty is mysterious crimes. What constitutes mysterious for you?

The mystery is in who the killer is, to me. Why they do what they do- what drove them to be a killer in the first place. I like being able to figure that out, since it's so foreign to me.

How many of them just kill because they enjoy the bloodshed?

Not as many as you might think. A lot of the time it was a crime of passion, or to cover up another crime, or for personal gain.

And does everyone have to pay for their crimes?

[It's a matter of genuine curiosity. The culture gap is as vastly wide as the time gap. Or at least, it feels that way sometimes.]

Some people do get away. We do catch a lot of the criminals, though- we're able to bring peace to the loved ones of the victims.

Ah. But everyone who commits a murder is expected to answer for it? [She smiles faintly.] I think that's nice to hear.

Yeah... why wouldn't they?

Times change. Cultures are varied. So I understand it...

In my time, there is a caste system. While a samurai is expected to justify his killing of peasants to the authorities, quite often very little such justification is needed.

[Castle sucked a breath in between his teeth.]

Yeah, see, we don't have anything like that in my world. Of course... not everyone CAN be held accountable for their crimes, mind- and it can be because of social status.

That's not surprising. Though I suppose you have more accountability in your own world. Where are you from?
