[He wakes up with a little gasp, immediately alert. Poe's not the world's lightest sleeper, but this bunk is way too comfortable, and it doesn't have the vague locker room smell of a Resistance base or the much mankier version that builds up after living in the cockpit of an x-wing for a couple of days.

Definitely doesn't look familiar.]

[This is not the first time in recent memory that Poe's woken up in an unfamiliar place. It's a sad measure of his life that this is by far the best one yet. He's not lost in a burning-hot desert with a pennelx-egg-sized bump on his head and no memory of who he is. Yep, still Poe Dameron, first thing he checks. And he's not strapped to the galaxy's most uncomfortable chair and waiting for the next deeply unpleasant conversation with either an Imperial interrogator or Kylo Ren (jury is still out on which of those was actually worse, he tries to not think about it at all).

So really, it could be a lot worse. Even though there does seem to be something going on with his neck, which is probably bad.

Sit up, look around, look down. Well, he's still got his orange flight suit, insignia and everything, but it's clean. So... that's nice. It's also a giant, flashing, hi, I'm with the Resistance sign, which is--good? Bad?

He slips out of bed and tries the door. Open. Okay. Peers out.]

[Yeah, great move, Dameron. Warn the laundry-loving kidnappers that you're up and about. Excellent spy work. Well. Why not.]

[ Ah. He knew that look. ]

[Well, Poe is the worst liar in the world. Everything shows on his face.]

And he got what he wanted. [It worked out okay in the end, he reminds himself. Finn and Rey got BB-8 out of there, Kylo Ren never got his hands on the map. So in the end it didn't matter that the information had gotten pried out of him. The D'Qar base had been saved, they blew up Starkiller, so it doesn't matter.

He just wishes he could stop feeling it.]

But it all worked out, thanks to Finn.

[ Dryly. ] It rarely is.

[ Poe wasn't Jedi. And the mind probe is invasive. Briefly, Obi-Wan recalls the black mask -- and lets it slip away from his thoughts. ]

So Finn is part of the Republic?

[Yes, this change of subject sounds excellent.]

Doesn't get much more part of the Resistance--or the Republic--than getting welcomed in by General Organa herself. Finn's... Finn's the bravest guy I've ever known.

[He sobers for a moment, since this does go back to where they started...]

He got me away from Kylo Ren when I knew that the Resistance wasn't going to send anyone to get me. [He'd known that was the rule, on these covert missions.]He left everything he knew behind because he wanted to do what was right, and he completed my mission when I was lost in the desert and had no idea who I was. Then he could've kept running, and no one would have blamed him, but he joined up with the Resistance, and he led the strike team into Starkiller base that made it possible for my squadron to even make our bombing runs.

And then that goddamn, perfect, wonderful idiot went toe-to-toe with Kylo Ren because he was trying to protect another of his friends.

[He clears his throat. He has a lot feelings about Finn, okay.]

We're lucky to have him. We're damn lucky to still have him.

[ In a way, that camaraderie . . . reminds him of the Clones. We're brothers, Rex would say to the troops. Cody, Boil . . . Waxer. ]

Trying to have some kind of lightsaber fight with Kylo Ren like he thinks he's some kind of Jedi or something. If I weren't so happy to know he's okay I'd be threatening to kick his butt myself.

He does seem determined to pick up some of the basics.

[Somehow, he's not surprised.]

Determined is definitely another word I'd use to describe him. He won't give up.

Dameron, you are a moron. General Kenobi seriously does not need to know how upset you are about Finn almost getting his stupid ass killed. Argh. Poe hasn't had a chance to talk to anyone else about this stuff and it just came out. It's been a busy couple of weeks. But that doesn't mean General Kenobi is the person to just emote at.]

It's fine. It's been some time since I've talked to someone so . . . impassioned.

[He shrugs.]

Losing good people is part of war. But that doesn't mean I'm any good at it. [And he wouldn't want to be. He's lost too many people.]

How long have you been fighting? I thought the Empire disbanded.

Since not long after I signed up for the Republic Starfleet. The Empire disbanded, yeah, but some of the remnants reformed into the First Order--and the Republic turned a blind eye to it. Kept running across them and no one higher in command wanted to pursue.

I wasn't willing to sit and do nothing. Lucky for me General Organa recruited me before I ended up in a court martial over it.

[ Blast that Palpatine. Was his hold so strong that even with his death, his lingering threads remained?

All that hope people had after the Empire collapsed... it's just gone. Even I could see it. That's why I joined the Resistance.

[ What is with the galaxy? Has everything Obi-Wan and the others done unable to keep any lasting peace? ]

That is a depressing thought.

[Meanwhile, Poe's suddenly keenly aware of the fact that he's talking to a casualty of the war against the Empire. Does General Kenobi know? It doesn't feel like something a guy should just drop into a conversation. It's weird.]

My dad said something like that recently. But... that's why I'm out there. Why most of us are, I think. We have to keep fighting against the dark, and remember that it wasn't a waste. It was another step.

[ It seemed more of a cycle than a step in any direction. Was Obi-Wan and Padme now the only people who remembered a life when there wasn't a war looming over the horizon?
