[ Hakkai is, perhaps unsurprisingly, cooking, and humming lightly while he does it. For protein-block-based food, it looks like he's managed to come up with a fairly decent stir fry. He smiles cheerfully into the camera. ]

Somewhat to my dismay, I seem to be starting to get used to the food here. I understand that some of the ships have designated cooks? Even among the ones who don't, I'd be interested to hear what recipes others have come up with to make the shipboard fare more palatable. Also, are there any particular ingredients you seek out when you have the opportunity?

[ Also, of course, this is entirely open to interaction from the crew of the Caprine/anyone who happens to have a reason to be there. ]

[Hey there person, it's your new security officer heading to the kitchen to grab some chow and looking very surprised to see someone else there. He's seen Hakkai around (it's hard not to on a small ship) but since Finn's spent a lot of time on the moon he hasn't really got to know anyone on board yet. So, after initially looking startled, he waves.]

Hey. What're you doing there?

[ Hakkai smiles brightly at this newcomer. Since his arrival he's mostly been keeping to himself as much as he's able, adjusting to the fleet lifestyle, but apparently he's got his feet under him enough to come out of his shell a bit more. ]

Ah, what excellent timing! I was just experimenting with a recipe. [ He gestures at the pan, which seems to have chopped blocks of meat and vegetable-flavored protein, lightly fried and glazed with some kind of sauce. ] Would you be willing to oblige me with a taste test?

[Finn peers over curiously. It smells good, all right, and he hasn't even tried to touch the cooking utensils yet. Might be worth a shot.]

Sure. What are you calling it?

--Oh, and I'm Finn. New security officer.

Well, if I was at home with proper ingredients, it would be stir fry. I suppose that's as good a name as any for now. [ He hasn't quite stopped smiling, but his disdain for processed protein blocks is quite evident. ]

And I'm Hakkai, the superfluous pilot. [ He doesn't seem upset about that title, at least. ] It's nice to meet you.

Stir fry. Okay. [It doesn't even look that hard to make, but Finn has a feeling he'd set something on fire if he tried.]

Good to meet you, Hakkai. My best friends are pilots.

There should be dishes around here somewhere. [ He rummages around until he comes up with a couple of plates and forks, and hands one of each to Finn. ]

Is that so? It's new to me, I'm afraid - at home I'm... well, a traveler, right now, but on land. We don't have flying vehicles.

Thanks. [He takes the dish and waits for the stirfry to be finished.]

Oh yeah? You're from a place without space travel? I heard there were some of those around, but I been traveling in space all my life. Is it really weird for you?

There; that should be good enough. [ He takes the pan off the heat. ] You can serve yourself right away if you like, but give it a moment to cool before actually tasting it. [ He beams brightly. ] I won't get a good taste test if you burn your tongue.

[ The question makes him sigh a little wistfully. ] In some ways, certainly. On the other hand, I've been on the road constantly for years now, so the biggest difference is really the technology. And the company, of course...

All right. [He serves himself and takes the plate over to the table to let it cool for a bit.] What did you put in it?

The technology here's pretty similar to what I'm used to, except I don't think the ships have hyperdrives. I got one of my friends here, and I'm really glad! But I hope Rey shows up, too. I really miss her.

I collect what I can on the planets we visit. Upgraded kitchens have some staples, but it never hurts to barter for what you need.

I sort of... [He smiles a little.] I cheat with my magic to stretch the supplies out longer.

No, indeed, it never does. What sorts of extras do you usually seek out? There are so many different kinds of people here, I imagine there's a wide variety of cuisine preferences as well.

[ The mention of magic gets him a slight headtilt. ] How does your magic help you 'cheat', if I may ask?

Meat, fruit, sugar, flour, starch, exotic spices... I can make do with the protein they give us, but they ration all the real ingredients.

[He pauses.]

I can conjure food. It's a very basic skill for mages on my world, but I've refined my technique in order to conjure ingredients as well. They will disappear after a day so I try to only use it for food that will be eaten immediately.

Mmm, "dismay" is a good word for it... I'm at the point where if we've stopped somewhere, I refuse to eat the ship food! Or, I buy a bottle of some kind of local sauce, and cover the ship stuff until I don't have to think about it anymore...

[ Sigh... ]

It helps that I can use my powers to get real food sometimes, but it's not always convenient.

[It is a well-known fact that Joseph doesn't have a lot of practical living skills. He's really good at eating, for example, but when it comes to actually making the food? Well, he lets other people handle that happily. God knows he lacks the creativity to turn that paste—that often literally looks like shit—into something mildly appetizing to acceptably edible. Fortunately, that is limited to Joseph and not everyone on the Caprine is inept. So, when Joseph sees Hakkai's post go up, he wanders into the kitchen.]

You need anything made, you should talk to Qing or Caesar. They're both really good in the kitchen. Suzie'd probably make you something, too, when she hangs out over here.
