Quick and painless interruption. I promise. Couple weeks ago I talked to a guy who didn't even know about the Avengers. So who does? What about the Young Avengers? I've seen a few familiar faces but there's gotta be more of us. Right? [ oh, she sounds hopeful. ] Or maybe you've heard of the Avengers while you were stuck somewhere else before here. I'd love to hear about it.

[ --- kate waits in silence for a moment, before adding: ] Also, I wish the fleet had a dance club. [ ... ] Hawkeye, out.

[ later that evening, she can be found at the classier gin joint on the iskaulit. although she's in a dress and her hair could be accurately described as done, kate sits with a nursed singapore sling and a notepad at her corner of the bar. it looks as though she's reviewing earlier conversations from the network, and is transcribing the occasional note. that said, she seems approachable. whenever someone passes by, she nods a greeting and smiles. doesn't hurt to be polite. ]

Well, it certainly wasn't boring. [ even after cap came 'round and gave them the official avengers invite. ] Some of the members have moved on, these days...

What kinds of powers do you have? Can I ask?

[ladybro]

I don't, actually. [ and that doesn't make her feel the least bit lesser. she's quite happy with her unpowered skills, albeit sharply honed. ]

You don't? How'd you make it on the team?

[ladybro]

-- Why do you think a hero has to have powers to be a on a team?

[takingkarabusiness]

—Well, I mean, I don't think you need powers to be on a team, but it seems like a hero team would be the sort of place where they're useful. Unless you're not doing any of the fighting?

[ladybro]

Just 'cause someone's got powers, it doesn't guarantee a win. And I don't need superpowers to have super aim.

Oh! Well, combat training can be like a superpower!

Don't get me wrong -- plenty do have powers. Enhanced-that, healing-this.

I didn't mean to imply you couldn't be on the team.

How many people are on these teams, anyway?

[ladybro]

We've got seven. Sometimes eight. [ kate pauses, as though she's double-checking that number in silence. ] Generally speaking, there's a small core team of rotating members -- but anyone who's ever been on the team still gets to call themselves an Avenger.

You know, so long as they haven't gone to the dark side.

That sounds like an elaborate group, but your world seems lucky to have them?

[ladybro]

Generally speaking, yeah. And it's not even like the Avengers are the only group around -- but the rosters have a lot of overlap.

Wow. An entire hero infrastructure? You guys must've been at it for a long time.

[ladybro]

Oh, decades. I grew up hearing about them. Watching them on the news.

That is not the case where I'm from, I'll tell you that.

[ladybro]

Winn told me there was someone -- uhm, Supergirl, I think? He was pretty shocked I'd never heard of her.

[takingkarabusiness]

Well, she exists, yeah, but she's new. And her cousin, Superman, has only been around for a few years. Nothing at all resembling organization.

[ladybro]

[ supergirl. superman. ]

So does that mean she's the Brownie to his Girl Scout, too?

She didn't come up with the name, actually. My boss, Cat Grant, did. And it should be on the record that I thought it was a little unfair, but it's grown on people, and we can't change it now.

[ yeah, kara's a little defensive ]

[ she doesn't know who cat grant is, but -- ]

Who's Cat Grant that she gets naming privileges?

The head of a multimedia empire called CatCo. Newspapers, tv shows, websites, blogs... she has a huge hand in tons of properties.

[ladybro]

...She must be a piece of work.

[ ignorant though she is, kate has particular insight into the kind of personality it takes to run a media empire. ]

Ms. Grant can be... difficult. Soul-crushing, even. But she has her good sides, and she really is very successful.
