[That wonderful open broadcast Marsiva offers will catch the newest shipmate as she wakes. And it is every bit as dramatic as could be hoped. She sat bolt up and rolled immediately out of the bunk she'd been resting in, coming to a crouch. with her back to the nearest wall.]

Zhaan? D'Ago? Crichton?

[She was dressed in a gray suit that looked quilted or insulated, white piping having a near glow to it. But the way she fussed at the high collar indicated she was not familiar with the garment.]

Where am I? What is this place? Chiana of you or Rygel have sold us out... [The near threat fell from her lips without conviction.]

Yep! At least as far as I've seen. If people like you, you get more credits and they send you stuff sometimes. So that's kind of fun.

I don't know if it's straight likability. Like... some people have fans and... um. They're not that friendly? I don't really know how it works. I'm sure you'll be okay. And your ship will help you out once you get assigned to a ship.

I will be assigned a duty station? Well there is some regimen in that. I still don't care for the sound of it all, you seem to be getting on well enough. How have you managed it?

Um yeah you get assigned a job when you get here. They stick an augment in you so you'll know all the information on how to do your job. You already have it. So I guess you should know? Or you know when you get assigned to your

I just try to work hard and do a good job no matter what I'm doing. But this is also... like a lot nicer than where I'm from. I'm the first mate on the Windrose and I run security there. And Dr. Crusher's gonna fix up my back soon so that's even better.

I've been placed in Security as well, I have no idea why I'm not a pilot. I've spent more arns in a Prowler than most of the Peacekeeprs I knew.

You are injured? Did it happen here, I haven't heard anyone say this place was dangerous yet.

It's weird, sometimes people get the job that makes sense, but sometimes they don't. It seems really random. But I think you can apply to have your augment changed too, if you think you'd be a better pilot.

Nah, it's been pretty easy so far, only one battle I've seen and I think it was kind of bullshit. My back got fucked back at home. I got thrown out of a building. They tried to regrow my bones but my back didn't come in right.

I'll see, if these ships are like mine then I might be better suited to that. Honestly I am more comfortable in a one man fighter than larger ships.

They regrew your bones? [She had known Zhaan could do it, but she'd been plant life. Was this woman also not life as she knew it?]

The short range shuttles are small, but all of the ships in the fleet have crews of eight or more. My ship has a crew of twelve.

Yeah. Using nanobots. So all my bones are metalloid composite now.

I will have to look into that, perhaps in the end security is where I should be. I prefer the smaller crew as it is what I have found recently to be more comfortable.

That sounds complex.

Hopefully you'll get put on one of the smaller ships then. They're all different... like everyone earns credits from the show, and we can improve the ships how we want. So my ship has more hot water and private quarters and a bigger crew, but other ships will be different.

It... is. I don't really understand how any of it works. I was just a soldier. They put me back together and sent me out to work.

[The information about the ships was helpful, but it was the later statement that made Aeryn stop short.]

You are never just anything, that is a lesson I have learned. Whatever you may have been, you can be more.

I liked being a soldier. But, I'm also not any more since I got turfed out of the army on medical. [Shrug.] But tech stuff is really not my thing.

I loved being a soldier, it was my life. I gave everything I had to it. And it wasn't until I lost it that I realize it was nothing. Someone, no, two people I have cared for reminded me that I could be more. I could be anything I wanted to be.

If I can do that, anyone can.

How did you lose it?

I was following a group of escaped fugitives and was captured by them. I was held and the next time I was found by my people I was deemed irreversibly contaminated. I could not return as a soldier, only as a corpse.

The saddest part is that I was willing to die, it was these new people that wouldn't let me. They saved more than my life.

Contaminated? By what? Were the fugitives sick with plague or something?

I'm glad they saved your life. Sometimes you find out you were serving the wrong people.

[Oh, if only it was so easy, Aeryn smiled a bit sadly and shook her head.]

I was contaminated by their ideals, their views and beliefs. Peacekeepers will not suffer challenges to their imposed order. And at the time I felt it right that I die for breaking that even if it hadn't been my intention.

What I learned from the fugitives was exactly as you say, my people have been misguided. We've lost what could give us strength in a search for what would make us powerful.

I understand. That's really difficult.

People disappear sometimes, where I'm from. I think it's probably like that.

It hasn't been easy.

How do you cope with that?

A lot of the time... everyone just forgets. I think. Or remembers it differently. Not because they want to, but because... they make you forget.

It's a really awful, helpless feeling.

They make you forget? I don't want to forget, my life has changed by the people who have come into it. I don't take that for granted anymore.

Yeah. The Department of Compliance does, I think. It's... I didn't want to forget things either. That's why I didn't go in for my last debrief.
