[ The video flickers on to Leto sitting on his bed, kicking his legs briefly. He grins when the video starts recording, pushing himself onto his feet. He tilts his head, that odd bird-like movement he often exhibits. ]

I have heard some interesting things of late, so I thought I'd put the question to you all. When you fall in love, can you only love one person? Can you fall in love with multiple people? Is love something you find yourself stopping after just one?

[ She gets the sense that she's hit a nerve, so she changes the subject. ]

Why did you decide to ask about love?

Why not? Love is a wonderful topic after all. It lifts us up, it enriches our lives. Why not speak of it?

I was just curious. It seems to be a pretty common topic to ask about here. Perhaps it's because we're so far from those we love.

It came to mind because my personal views on love are very . . . unique, so to speak.

Is it unique where you're from as well?

[ He chuckles lightly. ]

They certainly are.

Do your people's beliefs align more with mine or are they completely different?

[ My people. Fascinating concept. ]

They have their similarities. My, ah, people are desert dwellers. They were mostly concerned with the realities of the desert rather than anything else.

I've been to desert planets-- I've seen why survival leaves little time for philosophy. It's not an easy life.

[ She hated every second on Tatooine. Part of it was because it was an inhospitable desert. Most of it was the memories of her second visit. ]

True. I had an easier life than most, due to my rank as heir.

[ He never suffered the indignities of the desert, though he knows them well. He has his callouses, like any Fremen. ]

But when it comes to philosophies, I do not follow only the desert way.

It sounds like you follow your own way.

I follow a path. And I must stay on it until the end.

What path would that be?

It's called a Golden Path. It's meant to rid the universe of prophecies and the need for chosen ones.

[ 'Chosen One.' She never thought of Anakin as a chosen one, but it doesn't change the fact that others do. Hearing about chosen ones hits her in an unexpected way. ]

So you're the chosen one meant to rid the universe of the need for chosen ones.

No. Though . . . you are not wrong. I considered it. Saying no. I could have had a different path.

[ He lets that sink in. ] But my dream was to have a universe of surprises. Of potential and possibility. I may not live to see it, but there will be no prophecies or legacies to bind people.

[ 'A pair of twins and a legacy,' prophecies and chosen ones. This is hitting rather close to home, though Padme's expression stays relatively neutral. ]

You're only bound by something if you allow yourself to be.

[ Leto shakes his head gently. He's heard this argument before. That he could stop or leave. Let the future decide itself. But he's seen it. He sees it every time he lays eyes on another person. He's seen the end of it all. He sees the end of every loved one when he looks into his eyes.

And he just wants it to be over ]

Then I am bound by my own volition.

[ She can tell he doesn't entirely mean that. He does believe in prophecies and chosen ones. Perhaps it's normal where he's from. But Padme can't. Attributing things to 'the will of the Force' means giving up. It means that no matter what she does, it was somehow destined. She refuses to believe there's a pre-set path for her. For the Republic. For Anakin.

But she's not interested in an argument. ]

Something more binding than the idea of fate, then.

I chose. And it was a good choice. A selfless choice. What more could I want?

[ Something about that tugs at her heart. ]

It sounds lonely.

It is.

[ There's no denying that. Still he smiles. ] But not as lonely as it could be.

I suppose not. You seem to have gotten a lot of attention, at least.

Even among most, I do stand out as an oddity.

[ And his bright blue eyes scream an unearthly power. ]
