I have heard some interesting things of late, so I thought I'd put the question to you all. When you fall in love, can you only love one person? Can you fall in love with multiple people? Is love something you find yourself stopping after just one?

Well, how this sort of thing happens. Is everyone born with their history? Do you have any need for storytellers or libraries or archives if everybody remembers everything?

[ He pauses before speaking, in a smooth even voice. ]

No. The Pre-Born are usually the result of a large intake of Spice. There are . . . only two of us.

You know the other Pre-Born? Are you two close?

Of course. The other was my twin sister.

Oh! So it was one event, two children. Not that it's been attempted twice. I guess it's a pretty dangerous substance, this Spice stuff?

It is. Spice is a drug. It is useful for space travel and prescience, but it always comes with a price. My mother was on a spice-drug diet . . . for the pregnancy.

[ He hesitates. ] We were not the first pre-born attempted. There were others, though they died quickly. The other was my aunt who managed to survive.

[ On principle, the pre-born were abominations. Very few let them live past their infancy. ]

[monolike]

Oh. Oh. [right, okay, getting a clearer picture on this now.] That sounds terrible. Not that I'm saying you or your twin are terrible, but. That whole process.

It is not lightly done and there are rules for it for a reason. It's too dangerous to have that many lives in one person. Possession is always a possibility.

[ "Do you hear them? The voices in your head."

Yes, Leto hears them. He can reduce them to quiet murmurings, but he hears them. ]

That doesn't sound right though. If it's so dangerous, shouldn't it only be done on willing adults who know what they're getting into? Performing experiments on babies- that's not right.
