[ he's so tired, he's not even seeing it to get flustered about it.

he isn't, however, too tired to get really wide-eyed excited about all this new information. ]

[ it's not fair for a guy to be that good looking and that smart all at once, but right now he's too happy about having something else (and something that's so useful) in common to even dwell on the injustice of it all. ] I love programming with a touch of building but the opposite's way more useful around here - [ unfortunately the only project he has that's in the building phase of development is project plato, which is his project with kitty...but maybe it'll be alright to give kirk a peek under the hood? it could lead to the breakthrough they've been needing ] I got a - power source in the works, if you wanna take look. [ he won't get into it having to emulate the sun (ok he may have to touch on that if they make any progress) and why even though he knows kirk's one of the people he can talk to about it - it just kind of feels like then he's in on the project instead of consulting on it, and he's not ready for that.

he likes that it's his and kitty's baby. ok. no, he can definitely see the unfortunate phrasing here. ]

A power source?

_{[ He sounds somewhere between skeptical and excited, because the only power source he's seen that has a chance of longevity and power around here are the engines. Which he has had no wish to mess with. That would be Scotty's job on his own ship, and he won't pretend to have to much knowledge on them other than some basic overview ]}

What sort of power are we talking here? And sure, lead the way. You know, once you refill.

[ nodding excitedly. even without kara, it would be useful to have something independent of the ship's power, something that the atroma couldn't remotely strip them of. ]

We're talking chemically-produced independent solar-like energy.

[ oh wait. but he doesn't have protective gear in kirk's size - everything is tailor made for him and kitty...never mind, they can go over the plans. they're still very much in that stage of the work because - well, their protective gear was tailor made by him. he's good, but he'd rather take as few chances with it as possible, something tells him getting sick in space would be so much worse than getting sick period.

oh right - he waves his finger appreciatively at the reminder and refills his coffee ]

I've got the plans in Kara's office. C'mon.

_{[ Yes, he could agree with that, though he found it hardly to believe that Atroma didn't know they were working on it. Assuming that their every move was monitored, it would be hard to hide that sort of energy source, wouldn't it? But backs up were always nice. You never knew what the ship's engines could malfunction, Atroma's doing or not.

He raised a brow at the other's explanation, intrigued with a flicker of concern, if only because there were records of energy sources going wrong. But he was sure Winn had it well in hand.

He took up his own cup, topping off and following him. ]}

Why did you guys pick this to work on?

[ he's going on the assumption that they know everything he's up to. but if he lets it stop him from acting, then game over - they win. they may be able to see everything he's doing, but their attention may be divided, and even if it isn't - they probably think they have everything covered, that there isn't anything he could think of, anything he could do, that they hadn't already predicted and countered.

and that's where they'd be wrong. ]

You know, anything can go wrong in space, a backup generator is always a good idea. And people need sunlight.

[ kryptonians more so. if kirk wants the reason behind most of winn's actions - he needs to look no further than kara or kitty most of the time. ]

_{[ Probably a good assumption. At this point it seems foolish to think that they don't know, or that there are places that Atroma cannot observe. Maybe they'll be lucky and find such a place, but for now he runs on the notion that Atroma is a bit like Big Brother and sees all. ]}

You mean like Kara?

_{[ She was the only he knew who need sunlight for her powers, but he wouldn't be surprised to hear about others. That he might do something for Kara was hardly a surprise either, though to be honest he hadn't thought Winn quite advanced enough to create something like a solar generator. Mostly because he seemed to come from an era where that science and technology was non-existant or at most in its infancy. ]}

Right, so, where is this thing?

[ a small smile is what kirk gets by way of admission. he doesn't have it all figured out - not even close - which is why it's taking so long for him to plan. he and kitty are living on extremely educated guesses and the gut instincts of the brilliant at this point. it's not a terrible foundation for a life, but it's not the best foundation for an advanced science project. hence - they proceed slowly and with great caution. ]

Right now, it's mostly still here. [ he taps his head lightly ] You know, since one wrong move and we're - burned, exploded, or cancerous - we figured we should proceed with caution.

[ he pulls out the plans he's made with kitty out of a locked drawer, and lays them out on the desk, along with notebooks full of calculations and chemical formulas. ]

This is what we got to work with. [ he points at a list of chemicals they procured on the moon ]

_{[ Kirk has been there before when it comes to plans, though he wouldn't be quite so reassured to hear it with something like this, especially after that list of potential side-effects. A small crease forms between his brows, but for the moment he withholds any words until he looks over the plans.

He can see that Winn is rather brilliant - he could only imagine what he would do with someone like Spock to help him (if Winn didn't become frustrated with the Vulcan first). Many seem to be on point as far as he can tell from a cursory look, but he would be the first to admit that though he did well in these subjects they were not his forte by any means. That was what the science division was for.

At least Winn seems to have a healthy dose of caution with this, which was good because he wouldn't so sure that Kitty would. ]}

Where are you planning to contain this if and when you do materialize it?

_{[ That was his first and primary concern. This had the potential to be powerful, after all, and prone to accidents in the build stage. He approved of scientific investigation and experimentation, but he would rather that the whole ship didn't get irradiated too in the case of an accident. ]}

Right here.

[ he drags a big container into the open, currently housing those of their chemicals that can be kept together (still carefully separated though. you can never be too careful). it's a monstrously heavy thing he had no hope of dragging on board on his own. thankfully, the moon helped power kara up some. ]

Had to pool our money for this baby, but it was worth it. Could transport a reactor in this thing. It's not gonna open, and not gonna leak.

[ he really really hopes. just in case, he intends to wrap it in an extra layer of radiation proofing, made of the same material he used for their radiation suits. even so, he knows there's no way to be 100% sure, which is why he wants to go over every stage a 100 times. if there is a problem, he wants it minimal, and caught fast. ]

_{[ He stares at the container, but the look on his face isn't one of
reassurance. In fact, he looks slightly alarmed. He glances between it and
Winn, back again. He looks back down at the chemicals and equations laid
out on the paper. ]}

Let me get this right - you're wanting to create a power source like solar energy, but as a liquid or a type of particle fusion?
