Kitty, you're so cool! [Way, way smarter than Wrath. Almost everyone is, though. At least it feels that way. But that's fine. She doesn't have to be smart, just good at what she does.]

I don't mind at all. I wouldn't want to stand in the way of true love. I mean, it would have been nice if you could have picked some hot guy not on my ship, but the heart wants what the heart wants, right? [You're getting a look, Winn.]

And...thanks. [A little embarrassed by the praise from both of them, but also kind of liking it.]

[ shifting uncomfortably, he shakes his head. mental note - he is probably not going to get away with anything around wrath. ]

[ kitty's getting a look back. hey, just because he keeps noticing how much more attractive than him other guys are!!

his heart wants kitty. it'd be nice if she could have been assigned to a ship without some super hot guy - but it wouldn't be his life if she were.

he's just going to focus on how cool kitty is, because that is by far the most comfortable topic they've brought up in this conversation (though even here, there's a hint of discomfort. she's way too good for him). ]

You picked all of these up on your own? [ given her world, any learning method seems kind of impossible. it just makes it all the more impressive that she managed it. ]

[Hey, it was only Castle and Vision when she got here. The other guys all transferred in. Probably because they want a shot with her? Or nothing like that at all.]

Well, Kurt speaks German of course. And one of my students spoke Spanish, and I wanted to know what he was muttering all the time. There was a Portuguese guy in the prison so that's the newest. [She has a PAST with that man she hasn't actually gone into with Winn so moving on.] Japanese was from missions with Logan back home and Piotr was Russian. [Let's not linger on the former husband situation though.] Oh, and I'm Jewish so the Hebrew kind of snuck in there. So, yeah, a mix of having people around to talk to and books. I just kind of pick it up.

[And now she feels like she's talking a lot and kind of bragging and someone else say things instead.]

[ look he'd believe it. then again, he's the type of guy who would set up a secret base of operations for a girl. ]

[ happier than he thought he'd get to be home - and definitely happier than he expected to be when he first arrived. ]

Well, now I feel like I'm holding your education back - should I start speaking Javascript? [ but kitty, talking about you means his chances of making an idiot out of himself significantly decrease! take the compliments. ]

What's Javascript?

No one is holding anyone back and everyone speaks the exact right number of languages. [She smiles and drops a quick kiss on Winn's cheek. She doesn't think Wrath will mind. Or, you know, if she wants one too that can happen. She brought enough to share.]

It's an object-oriented programming language, to be brief...not something you actually speak, but she already knows my one, so -

[Of course she doesn't mind. Kitty and Winn are super cute together. She kind of wishes... but nah. She is so terrible at relationships and only makes things bad. ]

I don't know what any of that means Winn. You're really smart.

[ oh, it's his turn now? he scratches the back of his head, not sure what to do with all these compliments. ]

Thanks, but it's pretty wide-spread knowledge in my world. [ ok he's especially brilliant at it but that's only fun to bring up when people aren't seeing his value. they're seeing a little too much of it. ]

Programming languages are what we use to tell computers how to operate, and object oriented programming just means that the basic unit we address is an object as opposed to an action. Take me as a program, for example. In a non-object oriented approach, to get me to give a long-winded explanation nobody wants to hear about programming you'd have to have someone separate from me feeding me that information, telling me what to say. I would basically be an empty shell without someone to tell me what to do. Whereas in an object oriented approach, I'm a complete object, I already encompass that information. Every instance of me would begin spitting it out when prodded.

[Wrath keeps smiling like only someone who has no idea what the fuck is going on can smile. But she's trying very hard to follow. She kind of gets it, maybe?]

[Thought process comes to a screeching halt. No. She does not want to think about this. She kind of twitches a little, blinks, and tries to back mentally away.]

[She looks up from the fox she's showing all the attention to and looks curiously at Wrath wondering if everything is okay.]

Do anything fun at the masquerade? [Transitions? Who needs transitions?]

[ oh god, did he break her? apologetic look is on.

coming off of hanging out with hank at the masquerade and chatting with cisco on the network may have distorted his perspective of how interesting these things are to people.

this is why he belongs locked away in an office, where he can't hurt anyone's brain. ]

Oh, it was great! Winter danced with me, which really surprised me, he's such a sweetie. And a guy named Jim danced with me too, really carefully, so it was okay. And Charles taught me how to play chess! It wasn't as hard as it always looks on the vids.

That's great. I think I know all of them actually. Jim Kirk? He's on the Tourist with Winn. And I have a chess board in my room if you ever want to play or borrow it.

[ what he wouldn't give to have kitty's magical-transition abilities. ]

[ he nods, feeling awkward because he's really not the sort of person who says good people. but it sure beats jim threatens my masculinity! ]

I think so? Oh, good. He was really nice. So maybe I'll get to see him again!

I think I'd like to try more chess. I was bad at it, but practice is important.

Maybe. He's from a world similar to Beverly's too if it didn't come up. He's just in the past and also a slightly different version of it. I knew someone from his world back in the prison. One of my best friends. Well, both their worlds actually.

Practice helps a lot.

[ so many things he'd like to ask - who's beverly, who's kitty's friend from jim's world, how many people does she know who exist in several worlds besides the x-men? but that's a portal for another nerdy spiral and those are best avoided for the time being. ]

It's pretty much the most helpful way to improve I've ever found.

It didn't come up, but that's good to know! Very cool. They seem to come from a really good place.

Yeah, I thought chess was a smart person thing, but I think I can do it. Charles was really nice.

Chess is just a game. Anyone can play. [And should she be telling Wrath she's smart? That seems awkward, but this is a little awkward too.] It's more strategy I'd think a military commander might be especially good at it. [Unless she mostly followed orders from above.]

[ he frowns slightly at that, and bites down on the inside of his mouth, pensive. just because someone else couldn't follow through, doesn't mean that he won't be able to. he can't allow doubt to set in because the moment he allows it a foot hold -- is the moment he'll sink into horrible and crippling depression.

of course he wasn't the first to make that offer - what kind of person wouldn't want to save her life? but he's going to be the last, because he's going to do it.

he tunes out of the conversation, absentmindedly petting officer snuggles as he goes back to his very theoretical very early-staged calculations in his head. ]

Oh? That's really nice of whoever invited you. I wonder how that stuff works.

And that's what Charles said too, about chess, and it... it wasn't easy, but it made sense when I just thought about it all like troop movements and unit capabilities. I had a lot of fun with it.
