We have a masquerade coming up, and I was bored so I thought I'd mettle in people's lives for my own amusement. First, the disclaimer, there is nothing wrong with going to a dance solo.

Now, for anyone else, who wants a date?

Sorry, not me. Taken. But there are probably some of you out there thinking a date would be fun, and sure, why not? So speak up. Let's make some love connections. Or, you know, awkward dancing connections. I'm a mutant, not a miracle worker.

She's a magic user. I've only talked to her a couple of times. [Today being one of them. But she seems like she could hang with Laura.]

[Laura didn't have much experience with magic, really. Not enough to care one way or another about it.]

[Hey, not traumatizing is a start, right? She noticed how Laura reacted around the Jedi.] She's going to contact you. And just, no pressure. Whatever you want to do. [She doesn't think Nightingale would feel any, but she wants to make sure Laura doesn't think it's any kind of...X-Men duty. Laura's a lot more important to her than any whim notion to pass the time.]

[Laura never knows what she wants to do what awful advice, Kitty!]

What kind of magic?

[Don't choose Kitty as your life coach would be her first advice.]

Uh, the kind where she numbers her fire spells up to three and can levitate things? [Kitty knows so much about different kinds of magic. Is it obvious?] She could probably answer that better.

[Because assessing threats is clearly the important part of figuring out if someone is dateable.]

Sure. And maybe ask her about her interests and likes and less shop talk things too. [Though she does actually understand wanting to assess threats with the people you spend time with.]

[She said it the way someone else might say 'poison.']

[That gets an amused look from Kitty.] I hate small talk too. That stuff doesn't have to be shallow and lame though. But just be you.

Be me? [Laura shifts.] I...am not someone people usually like.

You really know how to sink a tender moment. [Lightly.]

Guess we'll have to work on the knowing.

[She shifts, clearly uncomfortable.]

Laura, I'm not exactly faint of heart. If you lived it I can handle hearing about it. But you also don't have to tell me anything you don't want to. Just don't skip it for my sake.

It is...very complicated. And if Rockslide is to be believed, very depressing.

[She shrugs.]

Logan claims it does not matter anymore. Who I am. ...Was.

She might just disagree with Logan there, but she wasn't around for the context.] What do you believe?

[Laura doesn't answer for a few moments, thinking it over.]

We are what people make us into. And I was made into a monster.

That isn't something that can be left behind.

I think who we are is always a little bit who we were and a little bit who we want to be. Or at least shaped by it. Like not being a monster, but always being someone who was once.

That...would be nice.

[But she's a little too entrenched in her issues to believe it.]

Like you said, I don't really know you, but I don't see a monster, Laura.
