We have a masquerade coming up, and I was bored so I thought I'd mettle in people's lives for my own amusement. First, the disclaimer, there is nothing wrong with going to a dance solo.

Now, for anyone else, who wants a date?

Sorry, not me. Taken. But there are probably some of you out there thinking a date would be fun, and sure, why not? So speak up. Let's make some love connections. Or, you know, awkward dancing connections. I'm a mutant, not a miracle worker.

I don't know. It's a lot of power and responsibility. I'm sure some balk at it. But I guess you're not much of a balker.

No, I'm not. But sadly, it's not my calling. [The singletons of the world are missing out on what could have been.]

Have you made any matches?

Weirdly? A couple. I don't know why people are actually letting me do this, but I think Laura and Nightingale are going to try it out. Do you know either of them? [She's actually wondering more about Laura because, well, mutant.]

I know Nightingale - she was in Kyriakos. I only knew her in passing there.

Oh. Was she somewhere else too or is Kyriakos even worse than you described? [Because she mentioned having to kill people. Unless that was home, but she didn't think so.]

Just Kyriakos, as far as I know. Why?

What she's been through just seemed especially harsh. [Leaving out details?]

[His perspective is particularly skewed, when it comes to Kyriakos. So his response is slower as he thinks it out.]

I have been through worse. But I am not really the best measure of the harshness of a place. [The camps. The library. Kyriakos. His experiences are too wide and too dark for him to be objective here.]

[She nods after a moment, accepting that.] No, I guess you wouldn't be. I'm probably not for that matter either. [What she said sounded bad, but how different was it from home where she was an assassin before she would have been old enough to drive a car if laws like that still applied.]

Mm, Laura, the other person I mentioned is a mutant too. No version of her in my world that I'm aware of though and not old enough to be around in yours yet.

It could be very harsh, at times.

She must be one I haven't met. [He has been lax at that.]

[She's quiet at that assessment thinking she knows what that means coming from him. It makes her glad for what she had in the prison not that she'd ever tell the wardens that.]

She's not your most social person. [She wonders as she's saying all this if Laura would not want this advertised to "Magneto". It's a strange thing to remind herself how others may feel about him.] But the fleet's not that big of a place. [At least not once you get settled in if you keep an eye on the network.]

Well, neither am I, really. [He can be, and has been in the past. As yet, he doesn't see a clear advantage to building a network.]

Maybe not. [He was their leader. He could be distant. Stoic. But there were some who had been closer to him than she was. Also, that was another man entirely. Easy to ignore when she wants to though.] But I think people are important to you. [Is she wrong?]

They are, yes. [Some people, at least. His people. He's stretched the definition a bit, but there are still limits.]

[Is Kitty one of his people though? He's one of hers. Not that she's that strict with the definition.] Me too.

Speaking of people... Had any problems with anyone? [Specifically any of the other X-men with less favorable memories of their own Magnetos than she has.]

[He thinks about it, but not for long. There's Mystique, but he didn't talk to her long enough for a problem to arise. Other than his own lack of desire to reveal his identity to her. That's his problem.]

No. No problems.

I'm glad to hear it. [Peace is good. Peace is what she always strove for. Is it wrong peace is kind of boring though? But she is glad to hear it.]

So, am I fixing you up for the dance?

Mm, no. I don't need a date.

Because you have one or because you're not going or because you're going to stand stoically along the outskirts watching everyone and pretending it's not a little creepy?

Well, it was three things, but I guess you probably mean the two that could fit together. Who is the lucky lady? [Because she needs to check her out and make sure she's okay with this. It's weird that it's not Rogue, but under the circumstances it would be weirder if it was Rogue.]

Man. [The correction comes quickly; he's not interested in being coy. He snaps the feed to private at this point.] And it's Charles.

[All of that delivered smoothly, but he's paying attention to what the reaction will be.]

[She's just...staring at him for the moment, dumbfounded. She just wasn't expecting either part of that at all. Men being with other men is certainly no shock. Maybe it wasn't handled well at home, but in the prison, it became something she saw as common place. But this isn't someone new she was meeting for the first time and neither is Charles. It takes her mind some time to wrap around what she just heard and to dismiss any thoughts that he might be messing with her before she manages to make with the words.]

Oh. [As far as words go, not impressive.]

So it's a date? [You've already been over this, Kitty?] I mean, are you...dating? [If he was just going with him as a friend he would have specified, right?]

[As far as these things go, it could have been a worse response. He, too, has been ensconced in a world where his relationship hadn't made anyone bat an eye. At home, he knows it's an entirely different story. He cares little for those kind of societal norms, as it's just another example of how they hate and reject anything that doesn't fit the concept of "normal". He hasn't been part of society in a long time.

He knows, too, that the man Kitty remembers from home was married to a woman. So of course this wouldn't be what she expected. Hence the private feed, though that's also for his own sake. He doesn't care to bandy his private life around on a public network.]

Yes, we are.

I'm sorry.

[Quickly.] For me! Not you or the dating. You just caught me by surprise. [She manages a smile.] Is it weird to say congratulations?

[She's still processing, but there is something about it that makes a certain kind of sense. The man had changed his entire world around for Charles Xavier back home. They'd been close enough that Xavier gave his life for him and then Erik had formed the team Charles wouldn't be there to start. He lived another man's dream for him and spoke of him with great reverence. She'd never suspected anything romantic between them, after all he had two children from one woman and another from Rogue. And maybe nothing romantic ever did happen between them at home, but clearly there was a profound connection.]
