Masquerade Mingle

[The night has finally come--the Gravity Rush is nearly upon us! What normally serves as a large performance hall has been gutted, emptied of its boring furniture and rigged up into a fantastical mismatch of technology and old culture. No matter where you go tonight, you're encouraged to move around, dance, play games, whatever helps you sleep in late tomorrow morning.

If you aren't one for scurrying around a ballroom all night, there's always plenty of people-watching to do. After all, so many people are wearing extravagant costumes and elaborate masks. How can you even tell who is who? Get lost in a crowd of sequins, chatter with a sun and a moon, or try to beat the guy in the monster-mask at a game of cards. Meet your friends or make some new ones--this masquerade party has begun!]

A ball! How exciting, she could hardly wait, even if the prospect of it being fancy dress was a bit daunting. Dress robes had taken enough getting used to. But Lily had settled on something she'd enjoyed in films she'd seen in her youth, so as a greek goddess, or version there of, she entered the party.

Everyone looked wonderful and she was just walking the hall and taking it all in. So many colors and costumes and so many beautiful women that she felt a bit of an odd duck. She wished she felt comfortable using her wand in front of people and she might have conjured something up but alas it remained stowed in the recesses of her dress. A lesson hard learned was that wizard or witch should never be without or out of reach of their wand.

"Oh, hello!" Lily called to one masked party goer she thought she recognized.

Sorry, false alarm! But the young "gentleman" who turns, their own suit not particularly trying to be anything except "classy" (there's black lace detailing on the lapels), certainly seems pleased enough behind the mask to see Lily.

"Yo." Haruka takes a moment to study Lily's own face behind the mask, determines they likely don't know each other, then keeps smiling (and watching) anyway. "You're looking particularly regal tonight."

Like a piece of moonlight, perhaps. The real kind, not whatever this particular moon gives off in passing.

Oh, that was not an expected perhaps this was not someone she'd met. Well there was always a chance to make new friends! And such a complimentary one at that.

"Thank you! You look quite dashing as well." Truth was easily enough to offer in kindness, and if they had chosen to act as acquaintances why shouldn't she as well?

"This whole thing is quite the party isn't it?"

Haruka shrugs: she's been to a lot of parties. Still, all things considered... "They're managing."

She nods to the dance floor as a new song starts up. "Are you spoken for?" she asks, gesturing to the dancers. It's a party. They may as well.

Lily hadn't been to a lot of parties this opulent, but she smiled and nodded.

"Not at all, and I'd be delighted." She hoped she wasn't too rusty in her steps, she'd never had much of a chance to dance at school and those rare occasions had been marred with a former friend who refused to entertain the idea of such frivolous pastimes.

Haruka smiles - it's her pleasure - and leads Lily onto the dance floor. She's an excellent dancer, and defaults to taking the lead, so she's more than happy to make up for any rustiness or uneasiness her partner might feel. Dance styles don't seem to have changed much from her planet to this one, either. That makes this easy.

"You're in the Fleet too?" she asks once they're both following the rhythm. She can't say she knows too many other people in their 'reality show' yet, but she'd like to think she can tell her fellow space tourists from the denizens of this moon.

Or maybe Lily just stands out.

Lily fell into easy step, which was due more to Haruka being an excellent dancer than her own skills. It was nice to let someone else take the lead in a sense, or literally in this case. It let her enjoy herself and her surroundings a bit more.

"I am! I'm on the First Breath." She took the question to mean that her partner was as well. "Have you been in the fleet long?"

Haruka shrugs (in time with the music, because why not). "Long enough," she admits; it's easy to lose track of time on the ships, and even fifteen minutes would have been "long enough" to Haruka. She tries not to think about that too often, though. No point in brooding and then potentially missing an opportunity to escape when it does arise.

Which it's got to. At some point.

But none of that should matter to the lovely young lady whose steps she leads around the dance floor, so she keeps smiling. "Though I'm starting to think I shouldn't just stay on the same ship."

This grin implies it's to go out and meet more people. Interesting people. Lily, maybe.

"I'm fairly new myself, I've only been here a few months." And she found it easier to allow herself to be spun and move if she didn't try to think too much on her steps.

"No! You should absolutely go visit others! Each ship is sort of it's own city. Very small city of course, but they all have a different sort of... well flavor I guess you could call it." She nodded, having taken the chance early on to visit friends on other ships. And now she does more with trading as well.

That's an interesting way of putting it. And, once Haruka starts thinking about some of the aesthetic changes on the Bishop - made by a child captain, and it shows - she sees this other woman's point.

"Any recommendations?" she asks. Though if this woman's on the First Breath, that might speak for itself. One never knows.

"I have seen The Paisley I have friends there and it is a fine ship seems very industrious more than decorative. I have heard lovely things about the Blue Fish and Wonderduck with such silly names I suppose they have to be light hearted." Now that she thought about it she really should get out more and meet more of the other crews too.

"Our ship is small and cozy, I cook a lot. I have a lab science augment but there isn't much to do so I make myself useful that way."

"It's still scientific," Haruka points out - she's not sure what reality show contestants would need to know about lab science either, come to think of it. A point against this actually being a show, or just more proof that whoever came up with this wasn't thinking logically? (No way of knowing.)

But still, the First Breath, huh? The song calls for a turn, so Haruka decides to do that one better and lifts her arm so her partner can twirl under it if she feels so inspired. "Sounds like you've found a good place for yourself."

Lily followed the subtle gesture and turned with more grace than she would have given herself credit for. A spin and a turn and back to starting position without one tripping, she might just be getting the hang if this!

"I think so, I mean back home I was in school for people who are different and here I am part of a crew and everyone just treats me like a normal person." And no one had a problem with her being a witch, well, aside from Allistair, oh. She frowned a moment, crushed were called crushes for a reason, it was usually how they ended.

"Lily, hi." Furiosa smiles at her. She's wearing a knee-length white dress that Peggy helped her find, and a beaded wire mask of a fox. For now she's forgone her prosthetic since it kept catching on the fabric of the dress. "Are you enjoying yourself?"

"Captain!" She hadn't recognized the woman, partially due to the lack of that impressive arm but mostly due to the dress. She had never thought to see Furiosa in such delicate attire.

"I am thank you, and how are you finding it? This is all very exciting isn't it?"

"It's definitely a different kind of 'exciting' than I'm used to." She doesn't sound disappointed, though. She'd had been dreading coming, but now that she's here she's actually quite enjoying herself. "It's interesting to see how different worlds celebrate."

"I agree," Lily nodded and looked around them. "This moon looks so hostile outside but in here it's so different. Like it's own little world." She was smiling almost nonstop.

"They really do know how to make the best of a shitty situation." There's a little bit of awe in her voice. If only her people could learn to be as industrious.

"I was recently told by a friend that it is the best way to win over adversity, to be happy and full of life in the face of all else." Cheese was surprisingly wise for a pony who talked.

She looks at Lily carefully. Wise as Cheese may be, Furiosa can't imagine that tactic working on the Wastelands, unless it was to convince your enemies you were so mentally unhinged you weren't worth the trouble of wrangling.

"I don't know that it's a completely sound strategy, but here ... here it works."

"It does, I am sure some places it would not be as effective." She had to agree on that, if she was facing Deatheaters in battle for instance happiness might not be the most effective defense.
