Masquerade Mingle

[The night has finally come--the Gravity Rush is nearly upon us! What normally serves as a large performance hall has been gutted, emptied of its boring furniture and rigged up into a fantastical mismatch of technology and old culture. No matter where you go tonight, you're encouraged to move around, dance, play games, whatever helps you sleep in late tomorrow morning.

If you aren't one for scurrying around a ballroom all night, there's always plenty of people-watching to do. After all, so many people are wearing extravagant costumes and elaborate masks. How can you even tell who is who? Get lost in a crowd of sequins, chatter with a sun and a moon, or try to beat the guy in the monster-mask at a game of cards. Meet your friends or make some new ones--this masquerade party has begun!]

[ kate does more than merely nod in return. she comes to stand next to laura, wearing a (predictably) purple gown, accessorized by both long white gloves and wide aviators that double as a masquerade mask. the whole look is completed with an arrow piece fitted through her black hair. ]

Quite the party, huh?

Yes. [She had been to many events like this, when she was younger. Though her reasons had been...unfortunate. This was a nice change.]

They seem to be throwing themselves into it.

[Not a criticism. She was even maybe a little jealous.]

I imagine that's the point. [ kate's smile is small -- almost hidden. ] Have you got any plans to throw yourself into it?

[Laura wasn't sure. She did enjoy dancing. And there was the obvious thing.]

Maybe. I...have a date?

[It wasn't meant to be a question but there it was.]

[ kate smiles. smallish, and warm. ]

Oh? So where's you're date? And why isn't he -- or she -- doing turns with you on the dance floor?

She is... [Laura hadn't been keeping tabs on her, because people kept insisting that always tracking other people was creepy.] Here. Somewhere.

...We danced earlier.

Well, as long as you danced earlier. [ playful, and pleasant. ] So? Who is your date?

A girl named Nightingale.

[Laura really...hadn't asked enough questions about her.]

Kitty arranged it.

Right. I saw how she was hoping to hook some people up. And I guess you were satisfied with her matchmaking services?

[Oh lord. That should not have been as complicated a question as Laura's brain made it. She had no idea if she was, she didn't even know what the criteria for being satisfied in this case was. Finally she just shrugged.]

It's fine.

I'm not sure fine is a glowing sort of recommendation but -- okay, okay. I won't pry any more.

...I don't know what I am doing.

[Laura hesitated, her expression...frustrated?]

How should I describe it? What would be...appropriate?

[ gently, because she does wanna be helpful: ]

A-are you having fun? Are you happy with your match?

Yes. She is nice.

[Laura actually smiles faintly.]

She let me lead when he danced.

[IT MATTERED.]

Well, that's something. [ kate smiles. ] And was she a good dancer?

Yes. She did not learn as quickly as I did though.

[No one's perfect, Laura.]

[ kate nods -- not at all surprised that laura is a quick study. ]

Have you danced much? Before here, I mean.

...Sometimes. When I was younger, I was sent...to places where dancing was necessary. Recently...

[She pictured a club, the beat, the movement of the crowd...]

Not as often as I would like. But yes.

I want to see a makeshift dancing spot pop up on the Iskaulit. Might even have to do it myself, if no one else steps up. Then you can dance all you want.

[ gently, because she isn't yet certain how to take the comment about dancing having been necessary. ]

[Probably best to not take it at all. Laura's life was a mess.]

...You want to open a club?

I think so. [ ... ] I like to dance. Y'know, to blow off steam. It'd be nice to have that option here.

[Those were mostly her reasons to.]

You should do it. The ship has many empty rooms.

Right? There's a guy willing to help out -- but we're still lost on the music front. The devices don't offer us much in the way of good music.

[Hm.]

Maybe people brought music with them when they arrived. On their phones.

[ a snap of her fingers and an excited point. ]

We could crowd-source our music. Maybe even come up with a playlist that doesn't get too dull too quick. That's genius.
