Masquerade Mingle

[The night has finally come--the Gravity Rush is nearly upon us! What normally serves as a large performance hall has been gutted, emptied of its boring furniture and rigged up into a fantastical mismatch of technology and old culture. No matter where you go tonight, you're encouraged to move around, dance, play games, whatever helps you sleep in late tomorrow morning.

If you aren't one for scurrying around a ballroom all night, there's always plenty of people-watching to do. After all, so many people are wearing extravagant costumes and elaborate masks. How can you even tell who is who? Get lost in a crowd of sequins, chatter with a sun and a moon, or try to beat the guy in the monster-mask at a game of cards. Meet your friends or make some new ones--this masquerade party has begun!]

[Whoa, that is one heck of a uniform. She's never seen so much braid on one coat before.

She's pretty sure she recognizes that voice--and the large areas of face not covered.]

Isn't it? It's supposed to look like a friend of my mom's.

It's Finn, right?

[Give him a minute...and then his eyes light up.]

Vima! Wow, I didn't recognize you at all.

[She grins, though the expression is only visible through the eyeholes.]

Good--nothing against Master Thon, of course, but I'd be a little worried if I looked enough like this to be recognizable. Where did you get that fancy uniform from?

There's a bunch of shops in the main market street selling costumes for this. Poe and I tried on a bunch of different ones, but these ones looked best.

[He gestures vaguely over to the food table, where his friend is standing with a matching red jacket.]

Did you make that?

It looks good. [She follows his gaze to note his friend in the same jacket.] You're a matched set.

And this? [She taps the snout of her mask.] Kind of. I had to draw a picture for them before they knew what I was talking about. No one here has ever heard of a Tchuukthai.

[how is that pronounced? ANYONE'S GUESS.]

Thanks. Figured we might as well, since he's the only other one here from my time.

[Yes, they're all from terribly far in the future compared to him, but at least he knew Poe before.]

A--I'm not sure I've even heard of them. No, wait. Aren't they supposed to be a legend?

Hmm, if my mother comes back and there's another masquerade, I'll suggest that to her. [It's said without sadness; she's becoming more used to Nomi not being around. Jokes help.]

I guess he is a legend for you, since apparently I'm a legend to anyone else from our Galaxy if they've heard of me at all. Thon is as real as they come. He's even got a lightsaber, like any other Jedi.

Do you have parties like this in your time? That Jedi can go to, I mean. It's the kind of thing that reminds me of the Old Republic.

[Well, that makes sense. Finn nods.] Well, it sure stands out good. You liking the dance so far?

We have conclaves, now and again. My Master was involved in a pretty chaotic wedding once, too. But that's in the course of Jedi business--I've never been to a gathering that's just about relaxing before.

[She grins at the compliment.] Thanks. It is pretty fun, though I haven't done any actual dancing yet.

[forcesensitive]

[That'd be pretty cool, an entire conclave of Jedi. Finn gets a little misty-eyed just thinking about it.] I bet they get so worked up the rest of the year with all the war games and worrying about the pollution that they have to have something like this. The war games--they blow off the steam in a different way, but it's good to show they can relax, too.

And there's a garden with the way it used to be.
