02 - video

Who: Winn
Broadcast: Fleetwide video
Action: the Tourist
When: now!

[ last time he posted anything, he was a nervous wreck and kind of nauseous. the changes the past two months have left in him are impossible to miss; winn is smiling, upbeat, and almost comfortable. the nervous energy that is there has more to do with his addressing a bunch of strangers than the constant fear of death by space-stuff that overshadowed his first feed. ]

Hi, if we don't know each other - I'm Winn Schott. If we do know each other...I'm still Winn Schott - [ shaking his head, why hasn't he learned from the last time? prepare a script! ]

Anyway! I've been here for a couple months now, and it's been interesting - and I mean that in the original sense of the word. Think about it - not only are we in outer space [ there's only a slight wince at that, and even a lot of excitement. space is terrifying - but it's also really cool ] - but we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to reach across the multiverse and learn things that haven't even been dreamed up in our worlds yet. I've been learning - a ton from just casually talking to people, but there is a much better way to do this if we all cooperate, [ open source. it's the way of the future! ] and I know I'm not the only one out there who's interested!

So, I've got a suggestion for anyone who thinks that's really cool - and - pity for anyone who doesn't [ and by pity, he means judgment. he gestures excitedly with his hands as he introduces his brilliant concept ] - 2016: A Space-Time Odyssey - a series of free weekly lectures about anything and everything we've got here. Talks about different worlds, science, history, art lessons, concerts - I know we've got some musicians here - basically anything anyone signs up to talk about, teach, perform, or however you communicate things where you're from. Since we don't have a lecture hall we can broadcast the talks - give ourselves a fun routine....and if that doesn't work for someone, I can post the notes I'm so gonna take of all of these. Who's in? Who wants to go first?

Thank you. [ She can't help beaming, practically glowing. ] I'm Hermione Granger, by the way.

I'm definitely not going to hang up, don't worry. It's a good way of making sure I remember your name, even if I wasn't sure I was going to no matter what.

[ It's easy to beam back at him, to show her delight and how excited she is - because she is excited at the prospect of all the things she can share. ]

My world, the one I was born in, has it's fair share of witches and wizards, but they're mostly kept a secret from people without magic. We go to school and learn to cast spells and control our magic and then we get jobs and live just like everyone else does.

[ There was just a little more... Warfare involved for her. ]

The Drabwurld was the same, but different at the same time. We were fighting a war there and everyone knew about magic. People were brought from hundreds of different worlds and given a magical item called a shard that was inside of their chest - their tie to their home world and something that gave them incredible power. I could talk about those?

[ Hermione nods her head, eager and happy to explain. ]

You're born with it. Some people have magical parents, so they're raised knowing about the world and with the expectation that they'll learn one day, too, but some people have parents that aren't magical - like me. I only found out when I was eleven and the headmaster came to talk to us. Everyone gets to learn, no matter what.

[ Despite what some prejudiced people might think. There were purebloods in the world that thought she had stolen her magic, that she was undeserving, that she should be punished, somehow, for having dirty blood - but she didn't care anymore. She had proven herself time and time again and it's been years since she last heard a whisper of it. ]

My shard? No, Atroma took it away from me. [ And she doesn't sound particularly happy about it. ]

Essentially, yes. It's a lot like going to any normal school, really - there'll be lessons you're better at and some you're not as good at, but you're all learning the same thing and magic works the same way for practically everyone. There's only ever unique cases, and they tend to have reasons.

[ Hermione can, at least, understand the search for logic; she understands that it's not as easy as just accepting things for what they were and dealing with it like that. It's not that simple, and she gets it - she had suffered the same as she was growing up. It's hard, especially when magic is entirely new, but she's used to it - she can't make everyone understand the way she does.

The apology makes her pause and her eyes scan his features before she shakes her head, managing a soft, small smile. It's sore, and it's a wound that won't ever really close, but - it's still something. Something that reminds her she has a home to go back to. ]

It's alright. I'd like to think my shard is waiting for me at home. [ And if not then maybe she won't even remember the Drabwurld at all. ] I'm on the Vanquish if you ever want to stretch your legs.

I'm not sure if aliens have much to do with it in my world. We've got magical creatures, though, and so many laws that we're trying to make better. Hopefully that'll do us for a little while - nefarious governments aside.

[ Hermione isn't judging him, not at all, and she says it all with a nod of her head. She's doing her best to work through things and try not to dwell on her own personal upset and suffering, but it's not exactly easy. She's alone more often than she isn't simply because it's easier, sometimes, and her heart is a little thick and heavy in her throat before she swallows it down and continues. ]

I'm free almost all the time, so whenever you'd like, Winn.

Maybe the magic in my world is more than enough to deal with all of that? As far as I know we've not had aliens - just Dementors and House Elves and other things, like dragons.

[ And that was before she had found herself in the Drabwurld, because there it had been even worse.

Hermione is careful with how much of her own emotions she reveals to others, if only because she doesn't want anyone to think there's some kind of obligation to take care of her or support her. She does it for her friends because it's something that she knows is important, but sharing her own worries and fears is another matter entirely. She can't really do it, and it's a struggle to come to terms with people that do care about her and do want to see her happier and free of the burdens she places on herself.

It gets harder, really, each day she's away from the Drabwurld, but at least she's trying. ]

My door is always open - especially if you want to see some magic.
