The urge to break loose and traverse the galaxy. It's a little hard to do when the journeys are mandated by the Atroma and they are the ones who decide when we leave and where we go.

[ He hums the next line. ]

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life.

Books lose me. It's hard to be engaged in material that resides in your mind, but poetry . . . poetry is limitless.

_{[ He chuckled, finding it hard to argue with that assessment of
himself. It was true, after all. He remembered an encounter with another
captain, the words he had said - that sooner or later, Kirk would find
himself more at home on his ship, in the stars, then he ever would on
Earth. ]}

That's.... more accurate than I think you might have meant it to be.

Are you an avid poet, Leto?

[ He laughs, soft and silvery. ]

I have no talent for the creative arts. Certainly, I can master or act out any role or scene, but I borrow from the skills of my ancestors.

Just fake it til you make it, right?

_{[ He grinned and winked at him. ]}

There is certainly a lot of faking involved.

[ Though he's grateful to Aather for giving him some social skills. ]

Heh, don't worry - there's a lot of faking on my part too. Can't tell you how many times I've had to bluff my way out of something.

That's a different kind of faking. Faking confidence or bluffing isn't the same as faking your abilities or skills.

[ He swings back and forth idly. ] In a way, I'm a bit of a cheater.

_{[ He snorted. ]}

You? Cheat? Never.

[ Wryly. ]

I'm sure you've seen me cheat plenty of times now.

Maybe I have, maybe I haven't.

But between you and me, not as if I'm in a position to talk.

[ He hums lightly. ]

There are many kinds of positions to be. I knew a man - a good friend, desperate to prove he was a hero. A good man. And he would keep pedestals in his heart for all those other heroes he saw. One of them was me.

I liked many things about him. But never that part.

_{[ He cocked his head at him again. ]}

I can see that. You don't strike me as the sort to enjoy being put upon the metaphorical pedestal.

Neither would you, I imagine.

[ The throne was enough. The Fremen fanaticism was enough. And the universe would soon follow at the heels of the God Emperor.

He shrugs loosely. ]

We all have positions. Saying we have only one makes us very limited creatures.

I don't know. I don't mind the idea of being someone people can look up to. As a captain, I have to be. But... you're right. I'm not sure I would want to be a hero on a pedestal. I'm just me, trying to do what I feel is right.

_{[ He gives him a wry smile, finishing cleaning up his area somewhat.

So, Leto, would you care for some pancakes?

[ Food. Leto can't really process food, but he can give a good game.

_{[ If Kirk thought about it he would realize he might have never seen
Leto eat, but given his mostly human shape it didn't occur to him that Leto
might not need to eat either. ]}

I'm always hungry these days. I have some left over pancakes I've kept in the fridge. They're pretty good warmed up, if you want some.

Ah . . . no. Best saved for those who are still growing boys.

[ A weak deflection, but one that often works. ]

_{[ There's a moment where he looks at him, but if the other did want
any, well, he wouldn't force them down his throat. ]}

Well, I could use a snack - and those pancakes won't eat themselves.

Actually, I want to show you a game from my world. I think you'll enjoy it. It's a more advanced version of chess.

Tri-dimensional chess, correct?

[ Little point in asking how he knew that. ]

Uh - yes, actually. Did you have one of your visions?

_{[ He tapped his temple, recalling what Leto had said of the ability
over their first chess match. ]}

[ He chuckles. ]

That implies I only have one vision and they pass on. The visions are constant. They do not depart.

Isn't that difficult? If you see them all the time? Do you have trouble separating the now from the possibilities and what was?

Always.

[ But he shrugs loosely, not bothered. ] But such things cannot be helped. I've gotten better at distinguishing the right moment at the right time. But I can be surprised.

[ And he smiles at that, brilliant and pleased. ] And that is always beautiful.

_{[ He smiles back, suddenly leaning over to kiss his cheek and grinned.
]}

Surprise.

[ He laughs, draping his arms around Kirk's neck and drawing him into a proper kiss. ]

The best kind.
