[both eyebrows go up, and there's a hint of a smile and a wordless gesture to look at whatever she wants. He's never shy about sharing his research]

You could say it's fairly similar to what I used to do back home. [at her question he purses his lips] Without - getting a sample of the plants they have there that haven't been affected by the toxins, I'm really just going off memory with - similar plants from Earth. But even then there's obvious mutations in the cells, to allow them to process the toxins - things like that.

[she says it like it's a good thing; and to her, it is. dr. anthony ivo was unethical and cruel, but sara used to entertain dreams of being a doctor. a part of her genuinely enjoyed learning about blood anomalies aboard the amazo, awful as everything else was.]

And if you can figure out how they do that, then the people here might be able to say goodbye to breathing masks.

[an understatement, since he dabbled far beyond his actual degrees, but - that was the important one, to him]

That's the hope. I mean - humans as a species evolve at an amazing rate, so they've already adapted more than just in the obvious ways. Or at least - that's an educated guess, since - I'm not actually sure how close to humans the people down there are.

Either way, I'm going to leave what I find with them. I can't do much about the terraforming, but - it's still something.

[the way he talks reminds her of felicity, a welcome reminder; and what he talks about reminds her a little of what she'd once wanted to believe ivo was, a more complicated one. a good-hearted scientist, researching because he wants to help humanity...meeting someone who may genuinely be just that isn't a bad thing.]

It's more than something. It could change their lives.

[her eyes linger on his notes as she pauses.]

Have you considered asking any of them for a DNA sample? You could run a comparison against any of the humans from the Fleet.

I've - considered it, yeah. I might still do that - ah, find one of the people I spoke to and see if they'd be willing.
