To be fair, she had already written the letters. She just also threw them at my head and I... finished one. And sent it.

She obviously wanted to make amends with him and have a relationship. I just gave it that little extra push to make it happen.

...And went to their dinner to help them talk to each other when their first dinner went poorly.

I guess mostly it's just... I can't have a relationship with my mother, and it would pain me for someone to have that opportunity and not know about it, or choose to pass it up.

Also, she did fire me immediately, but then she needed dinner reservations, and my little mom speech maybe influenced her decision.

[ a moment of pain flickers across her face. and if kara is accustomed to reading such things, it's probably an easy conclusion to develop: kate's own mother simply isn't in the picture any longer. so she can certainly relate a little more. ]

I'm glad she took you back. She doesn't know how lucky she is.

I just really like my job. And Cat Grant's an amazing person. It's definitely worth it, some days more than others.

The other Hawkeye isn't my boss, per se -- but he's, y'know, something. [ real specific, kate-a-saurus. ] Usually, he's my hero. But then he turns around and does a really great impression of a ten-year-old throwing the lamest of tantrums.

So I get it. Some days more than others.

Ex-mentor. Now-partner. Err, sorta. We broke up. [ ... ] As friends.

Back home. [ she raises her glass. ] And it's only happened for me -- not him. Not yet. So I guess we're partners again, for the time being.

Oh, no doubt. [ a rueful smile. ] But he still means a lot to me, I guess. And technically, he hasn't done the thing that precipitates the split. It's not even a sliver of a thought in his head. It couldn't be.

[ kate shakes her head. it's not that the details are too personal -- it's that she doesn't dare risk clint's standing within the fleet. she couldn't stomach anyone thinking less of him. perhaps kate hadn't quite been able to forgive him, but that's back in a world where his value and his heroism had been well-proven. time and time again.

here, she feels...protective. ]

We made a call. Together. And then he went back on it -- he failed to live up to his own code. The code he as good as taught me. The details aren't important.
