[Apollo looks... a little flustered? Slightly bewildered? Like he might have accidentally exploded cooking supplies?]

I'm trying this cooking thing. I'm pretty sure it's not dangerous to eat, but does anyone want to come and be a guinea pig? These gel things are making roasts a lot fucking harder than they should be...

[On the Bishop, Apollo has taken over the kitchen for now. He manages to look surprisingly domestic, bumming around in ship standard provided clothing and hair pulled up into a ponytail that bobs along to whatever music he's imagining as he 'cooks'.

Cooking occasionally involves eye lasers. Which doesn't work on the gels half as well as he hoped it would.]

[ she laughs. ] Depends on the corner of the galaxy. Some are really human-centric. Like this collection, apparently.

[ it's like being at the heart of the empire. except those ships have more space. ]

As it turns out, I am human, and she had nachos.

My world, humanity isn't really out in other solar systems yet. Any encounters have been other species coming to us. We've done a fair bit of cruising across parallel worlds, though.

Mm, nachos. I have no idea how to make nachos, like, the corn chip part.

[archaeotechnician]

Huh. Well, how about this. I'll swap you stories for food that will hopefully not burn the roof of my mouth off. And I'll see if I can get you the nacho recipe later.

Minus the whole mouth roof burning part.

Yeah, okay. I'm always happy for company.

And by burning, do you mean temperature heat or spicy heat?

[ ten minutes later ( give or take five because she's curious and likes to check out the differences between the ships ), she knocks on the wall. ]

Haven't burned the place down yet? [ teasing, teasing. ]

[Apollo's dancing in the kitchen. He's heard her, but he doesn't look up until she speaks. He's busy serving some kind of batter into muffin tins.]

Not yet, but there's still time.

[archaeotechnician]

Just in time, then! Want some help?

Sure! I have a nominal idea of what I'm doing and this implant thing helping out.

He brushes his hair aside to show some silvery spots behind his ear.

[archaeotechnician]

And I've got a decade of feeding myself so we'll do fine. Oh, I forgot.

[ she offers her right hand to shake. ]

Doctor Aphra. Pleasure to be cooking with you.

[He shakes! He has a very warm hand.]

Apollo. Good to meet you. I only really started eating on a regular basis when I became a father and needed to remember to feed Jenny.

[archaeotechnician]

[ her smile softens, but she keeps up the same chipper tone. ] Kids'll do that.

Or so I hear. I stopped having any experience with them after I stopped being one.

[He gets that sappy, fond parent look.]

I never thought I'd be a parent, but when Jenny was orphaned, we were the only people really able to look after her, so my then partner and I adopted her.

[And out comes the photo wallet. Jenny is bright, pretty asian girl of about six, wearing a plastic tiara, pig tails, and a union jack teeshirt. She's also glowing around her hands and feet, beaming up at the camera.]

[archaeotechnician]

Aw! She's cute. [ and lucky, she thinks more cynically. a happily adopted orphan is lucky, indeed.

she points to the strange glow. ]

What's that?

Oh, that's her attempt at flying at the time. She had quantum warping powers, and she's starting to understand how malleable 'gravity' is when you can warp quantum.

She's a fast learner.

[He sounds so proud.]

[archaeotechnician]

Warp — [ wow. she blinks in surprise. ]

Never heard of a kid who could do that. [ or…anyone. ] That kind of thing common where you're from?

Well.... Jenny is one of a kind.

Super powers happen. Jenny... has never happened before. Usually people don't come into powers until they're older.

[archaeotechnician]

[ an amused huff. ] I don't envy you when she's a teenager. Good luck sending her to her room.

It doesn't work now. Luckily... she's a good kid. Been through too much to be real trouble.

[archaeotechnician]

And she's got a good dad. That also helps. [ and an ability that means only a fool would cross her. a soon dead fool. kid's lucky as hell.

aphra claps her hands together. ]

So tell me what the next step is. I'm starving.

[He gives her a bit of a bashful smile at that.]

Oh, there's mashed potato and mince with gravy if you want some? So far people have approved?

Sounds divine. Worlds better than the rations I've been living off of. Give it here.

[He gets some from the oven, putting a serve on a plate and handing it over with a fork.]
