[Simon had gotten absorbed in a project, since the Fleet didn't seem to be moving from this planet any time soon, so he missed Nami's broadcast. She'd find him in the med lab, playing with the potions and chemicals he'd purchased on the planet.]

[When she comes to the door and finds him messing with things, she wonders if he did miss it. Nami makes her presence known by a brief rap at the door.]

Hey. Can I come in?

[Simon looked up at Nami's knock and smiled, stepping away from his table.]

Absolutely- just don't get too close to the chemicals.

No fear there. [Dryly. She steps into the room and takes up a seat. Probably the same one she was sitting in when Simon treated Sam's hand.]

I'm guessing you didn't...just hear me on the network.

[Simon's expression turned serious at that.]

I didn't, no... something happened. [It wasn't a question, a mere statement of fact.]

Yeah. Nothing drastic, but probably not great news, either.

[For some of them. She's pretty sure Robin hasn't even met some of their newer crew beyond a simple hi/hello.]

Robin's name isn't on the ship roster anymore. He's gone home.

[Simon closed his eyes and leaned back his head at that, taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly.

That- was most definitely unexpected, but he knew Nami wouldn't make up something like this.]

... damn. I wasn't expecting to hear that.

I'm sorry. [She was on the money, then. Attachments in this kind of place can be painful.] I guess... he's been here a while then, huh.

[Simon nodded.]

Since I arrived here, in fact- and that was more than a year ago. I just... I guess I sort of assumed he would always be here, if he'd lasted that long.

Everyone goes home eventually.

...maybe you won't be so far behind him.

[Simon smiled crookedly.]

I do not expect to be that lucky, but you never know... maybe we're getting closed to the end of a "cycle".

...you heard much about these "cycles"? [She's heard it in passing once.]

Aside from the fact that they allegedly exist, nothing, of course. It's one of the many things Atroma is infuratingly vague on.

Given the way people come and go at varying times, their cycle probably refers to individual ones, if it exists at all.

[Which isn't very reassuring, probably. Robin's leaving means nothing for anyone else if that's the case.]

Or it's another lie they tell us to give us hope that we will be released.

That's more likely.

[She gives him a crooked grin.] I don't think I'm very good at consoling people.

[Simon laughed quietly.]

It's a skill one needs time to develop, for sure. And there's no good way to break this sort of news, so I completely understand.

Yeah.

[She fidgets for a moment, then sighs.] The other bit of news is that apparently I'm now Captain. You're the only one on board that's been here longer than me. You okay with that?

[Simon blinked at that, then gave a genuine smile.]

Congratulations. And honestly, I understand... I'm not sure I would have enough of an air of authority for this crew.

I'm not altogether sure there's a lot of authority to be had. [But she grins, because he's smiling so it's probably okay.] I guess we'll see how we go.

I think you will be great.

[Heh.] Thanks.

I mean, I do like to boss people around.

And more importantly... you do look out for others. Help them and get them help and support when they need it- like the times you've brought the injured to me.

That's bossing them around, isn't it? [But she grins anyway.]

True, but you do it out of a genuine desire to help them.
