[ The video starts with Charles sitting on his wheelchair, his hands neatly folded on his lap. He rubs faint circles on his legs for a few seconds, the only real sign of tension. ]

Hello. My names is Charles Xavier. I am a geneticist graduated from Oxford. I -- [ ran ] -- run a school in Westchester for the Gifted. Mutants. People with abilities. My focus is the training and control of abilities we do not always fully understand, abilities that are gifts but can often run amok.

[ He pauses, catching his second wind before continuing on, poised. ]

I am also a telepath with a full set of abilities in aiding the mind and extremely . . . proficient. I do not read minds without permission, because honestly, I really don't care.

[ Charles pauses again, wondering if he should say more and dismisses it. People can ask him if they need details - which they will. ]

If anyone would like to make use of my abilities and skills, they are certainly most welcome to. Confidentiality, of course, is key and you need not make anything public if you do not wish to. If you have any questions for me, the floor is open for you.

[ Well. Not true, but Charles' body is already fairly broken. It's hard to make a bad situation worse. ]

You wouldn't be hurt. You would be dead.

[ What a fun joke. ]

If you can't trust yourself, try and trust me.

I've never trusted anyone with this before. I've barely even spoken about it.

How do you feel about that?

Would it be rude to say uncomfortable.

You wouldn't be the first.

But perhaps, that's good. It should feel that way, at the start, and it might help you warm up to the idea.

I should be feeling regret for speaking up? That's a good thing?

It's important to feel. And to embrace that feeling.

I don't want you to stop in that. But it shouldn't be the only thing you feel about yourself.

[Hatred, disgust, disappointment...] Yeah? I'll have to keep that in mind.

And I think, on the next planet, we should have a session.

What, the next one? I dunno, seems kinda fast. Maybe a couple after. [Vash will never be the one to come to Charles to remind/ask for a session.]

Uh-huh. I'll pencil you into my schedule. [Under: never.]

[ He watches him carefully. ]

I knew a friend of yours. In a different place.

Oh yeah? [Vash has trouble thinking of his friends getting off their dusty ball of a planet.] Who might that have been?

His name was Wolfwood. He was a team mate of mine.

[Vash stomach goes cold deep in the pit. He wasn't sure who he was expecting, but it wasn't the preacher.]

He-- he never mentioned to me that-- ah, he got off the planet before.

He wouldn't have. We were different. We had lost our memories long ago.

You lost your memories? That must have been really hard, for both of you.

[Should he tell Charles what happened? It wouldn't change anything.]

It was hard for everyone.

[ He pauses. ] You were very important to him.

Really? Heh, here I thought I did nothing but annoy him. [He kids. Mostly.] He was a really good man.

Well. And that.

[ Charles' feelings on his team are mixed. He cared for them. Took care of them. He made sure they survived.

But they didn't love him. They were afraid of him. While most other teams had strong bonds of family and trust, Charles had no one. ]

[Vash can't help himself. He leans his head back and laughs.] Yeah. That's more what I thought.

[At least with Vash he won't fear Charles unless he ever shows himself to be a bad person.]

Do you know how he got off the planet by chance? Or was it like this place? Waking up somewhere new?

[For once he's not just changing the direction of the talk just to get it off himself. He'd love to find a way to get the people back home help.]

[ He nods. ]

That's how we arrive. We're told that we've lost our memories and we need to win them back.
