[ they’re not kidding when they say these broadcaster things will start up the moment you start waking up. because the figure on the screen barely even shifts before it comes on, breathes for just a second or two before his eyes fly open and he’s sitting up.

because that cold chill? this bed? everything he’s seeing around him? is not right.

he surveys the room for a moment, trying to place not only himself but where that someone is watching me feeling on the back of his neck is coming from, before he turns and looks directly into the camera.

I'm admittedly starting to wonder if it is. It's either that or whoever's responsible has a terrible sense of humor.

As much as ranking officials can be a joke I'm not sure I like the idea of my captain being appointed for a laugh.

In a manner of speaking. Only difference is I'm the captain, and I know I wasn't put here for my experience.

Oh, I know. If it turns out I'm not fit I'll step down immediately. Only reason I haven't so far is because I'm at least going to try first. Whatever that entails.

So far? Being teased endlessly by friends. I did have to handle something between ships but it was more discussion than anything. Other than that? Not a clue.

I'm the exact opposite of a captain-y type. I'm a geneticist and teacher.

Yeah, that's pretty opposite. But being a teacher isn't too far from it. Maybe it'll work out in your favor.

Maybe. I am pretty good at dealing with teenagers, that has to count for something.

Yeah, I can see that being a major plus around here.
