[ they’re not kidding when they say these broadcaster things will start up the moment you start waking up. because the figure on the screen barely even shifts before it comes on, breathes for just a second or two before his eyes fly open and he’s sitting up.

because that cold chill? this bed? everything he’s seeing around him? is not right.

he surveys the room for a moment, trying to place not only himself but where that someone is watching me feeling on the back of his neck is coming from, before he turns and looks directly into the camera.

I need to know who we talk to around here about positions and ranking officers.

With his application for the captain's position. I'd hoped he might have been making a joke in poor taste.

Good to know the positions are held in high regard around here.

They can be. I know I take the position of Captain quite seriously.

[ ahem. if there's a double entendre hidden in there, then it's for her and her alone. ]

Then at least we'll have one ship that knows what it's doing.

[ you know, if steve had told him this was the peggy carter he was talking about, maybe sam would pick up on that entendre.

[ aha. the vague familiarity is, perhaps, a two-way street. good. she's glad someone else can be properly flummoxed about this situation alongside her. ]

I don't ordinarily say this but -- Peggy will do fine. A friend of Steve's is always a pleasure to meet.

[ inch by inch, in the fleet, she's been loosening her iron grip upon formality. ]

'47, to be exact. Nearly two years after he went on ice. But -- yes, we knew each other during the war.

And this is your first taste of the modern age?

[ i mean, if you abide by the whole sink or swim methodology, sure. ]

It was a bit of a leap. A steep learning curve. But I've been with the Fleet just a few months shy of an entire year, Sam. I've had a lot of time to climb that curve.

The same can be said with what I've learned about the state of the world back home in the following decades. How strange it is to being to see the distinct pattern of the years ahead -- of what's to come.

[ he's got no problem with that, that's for sure. ]

I've had the distinct pleasure of meeting a number of your teammates, as well. Although I still can't stomach the name. Avengers.

Talk to Stark, the name was already in place when I came around.

I've been informed I ought to blame Director Fury.

[ a shadowy figure, certainly. and her supposed (eventual) successor. she's not sure how to feel about that. ]

No. I know him by his reputation alone.

He's definitely got a big one.

Either way, I'm pretty sure this is where I mention that you know where to find me if you need anything.

I rather imagine I ought to be the one offering you that comfort, Sam. After all, you're freshly arrived. If I can ever help you in any way...

Not to brag, but I'm pretty decent at rolling with punches. This will just end up being one more thing to get used to.
