[So we've been stuck on the poison moon for a couple months now, so a lot of people probably want to get away from that.

Unfortunately, the only place you really can get away from it besides your own ship is the Iskaulit. So, here's a June Iskaulit mingle!]

[Felix doesn't come to the garden to work - he leaves the tending of the space to people more qualified than he - but limits his time in there to wandering and occasionally smelling the flowers when no one else is there to criticize him for it.

Seeing someone there doing none of those things is perplexing enough, especially when it appears that Kirk isn't very good at at it]

What is it that you're attempting to do, precisely?

Trying to meditate in the more orthodox manner. I thought it might be a good thing to change it up from running on the treadmill, but it's not going quite as planned.

[Admiring flora was one of interests that Malkar openly sneered at and attempted to suppress in his student, so that even today it feels like something he will always be judged for.

I'm not sure what the orthodoxy for the practice is in your world, but personally I think your first mistake is trying to twist yourself up like that. I'm not sure how that would help you concentrate at all.

You might be right. To be honest, I achieve a meditative state when I'm doing something like running instead of just sitting still, but I thought it might be a good idea to try a change-up. But I'm happy to take any other tips you can give me.

What brings you around here, Felix?

Much the same as you, I imagine...looking for something to fill the time.

Yes, I know, but it's just metal walls. I like it out here better, where I can smell the earth.

[Felix shrugged lazily. There might be plants here, but they were still on a ship, there was little they could ever do to disguise that fact. In fact, it seemed more obvious because there was no sky. No fresh air. At least in a closed room it felt natural to him.]

Implying people who meditate regularly aren't interesting?

You can't really talk to a meditating person, can you? Much more interesting out here.

Which, I suppose, defeats the purpose of meditating. But I did tell you I wasn't good at this.

[Smirk] Yes, I think you mentioned that.

Usually, there is a goal with meditation. Relaxation. Visualization. A way to answer question or order your thoughts. Mentally, it's not an idle process. It shouldn't be boring.

[He smiles to take the edge off what began to sound, briefly, like a lecture]

It does, however, take practice until it isn't.

I get to that state when I'm moving - running, usually. I just... let my mind float, so to speak. I thought I could achieve it being still, but it seems like that'll be beyond me.

Not in those precise words, but I think I'd deduced that much. Why not take a run around the ship if you find that preferable?

Or maybe a walk with company? I've always preferred company to solitary contemplation.

This place is coming along. Have you had much of a hand in it or are you solely keeper of the library?

The gardens? No...no, not at all. I enjoy plants. I enjoy learning about them. I simply suffer the affliction of most academics, in that I can't always put to practical use the knowledge I accumulate.

[He smiled somewhat sheepishly, hands clasping lightly behind his back as they started to walk]

Maybe not right away, but you never know. Someday in the strangest situations it might come in handy. Especially on a journey like this.

Possibly. The problem is there is far too much to learn, which is something that has been plaguing me even before Atroma decided it fit to bring me here, but someone it seems more onerous.

But that's sort of a nice thing, isn't it? There's always something to learn - it never stops. I think it would be, well, boring if we ever learned everything there is to know.

You have me there. I'd probably be even more upset if that were true. I think you have a more scholarly mind that you seem to give yourself credit for.

Well, I never said I don't like learning. I love history books, actually, and non-fiction. I suppose I just tend to leave the deep, philosophical thinking for others.

A hobby difficult to avoid when there is so much time to think. [He smiles ruefully]

Was it your idea to try meditation or did someone suggest it?

Suggested, but I think that probably obvious, right? There was an... incident, about a year ago. Meditation was suggested to help deal with the problem. It kind of worked, I think, but I had to modify. I meditate better when I run.
