Religious reasons, partially. The jury's out on whether drawing living beings is similar to worshipping them.

[He shrugs, not entirely bothered by that.] But also partially because I prefer calligraphy.

What about drawing inanimate objects?

They're fine. Landscapes too, but it gets murky once you start talking about animals or people.

How did you start on calligraphy>

Maybe.

[He brightens at the subject change - Stefan might be a little too fascinated by this art form.]

My mom was really good at it. When I was little, I'd copy her Arabic and it kinda spiraled from there. Now, it's out of habit, since I haven't needed to write in English for a while.

Could you show me? Even if you're rusty.

( She's never seen anyone do it before, even if she's seen pictures in texts before. Seeing someone do it - seeing something more meaningful is always nicer )

[He reaches for a pen, an inkwell, and a spare piece of paper before starting to sketch out a verse from the Qur'an. Stefan's hands are shaking more than usual - he's rusty, and he hasn't done this in a long time - but the meaning and the intent is clear.]

What I'm writing says "And He - God, I mean - is with you, wherever He may be."

How long did it take you to learn?

I wanna say a couple of years, but I'm also fluent in Arabic, so it's hard to really gauge...

Um, I mean, that's awesome. We'll have to set times, and our translators do the speech thing like magic, but I'll start you on the alphabet and we'll work our way up.

I taught myself archaic Latin, it'll be fine.
