Who: Everyone
Broadcast: N/A
Action: Iskaulit
When:

[So we've been stuck on the poison moon for a couple months now, so a lot of people probably want to get away from that.

Unfortunately, the only place you really can get away from it besides your own ship is the Iskaulit. So, here's a June Iskaulit mingle!]

[He shakes his head.] I haven't picked up a pencil since I was a kid. Don't think I'll be starting anytime soon, either.

Why not?

( Actual curiosity )
stefanged: (oh really now?)

Religious reasons, partially. The jury's out on whether drawing living beings is similar to worshipping them.

[He shrugs, not entirely bothered by that.] But also partially because I prefer calligraphy.

That makes sense.

( And is pretty interesting. Plus calligraphy is cool )

What about drawing inanimate objects?
stefanged: (well okay then)

[personal profile] stefanged 2016-06-17 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
They're fine. Landscapes too, but it gets murky once you start talking about animals or people.

Then maybe next time I'll have to get you on a landscape.

( Or not, but she bets it would be great. Just a feeling )

How did you start on calligraphy>
stefanged: (rare smile)

Maybe.

[He brightens at the subject change - Stefan might be a little too fascinated by this art form.]

My mom was really good at it. When I was little, I'd copy her Arabic and it kinda spiraled from there. Now, it's out of habit, since I haven't needed to write in English for a while.

Could you show me? Even if you're rusty.

( She's never seen anyone do it before, even if she's seen pictures in texts before. Seeing someone do it - seeing something more meaningful is always nicer )
stefanged: (oh really now?)

[personal profile] stefanged 2016-06-21 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure.

[He reaches for a pen, an inkwell, and a spare piece of paper before starting to sketch out a verse from the Qur'an. Stefan's hands are shaking more than usual - he's rusty, and he hasn't done this in a long time - but the meaning and the intent is clear.]

What I'm writing says "And He - God, I mean - is with you, wherever He may be."

[personal profile] intelligently 2016-06-22 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds like a nice sentiment.

( And it looks nice too - the lettering of the language, the way he's written it )

How long did it take you to learn?
stefanged: (that would do it)

[personal profile] stefanged 2016-06-23 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I wanna say a couple of years, but I'm also fluent in Arabic, so it's hard to really gauge...

[He taps the paper thoughtfully.]

Would you like to learn how? I've been thinking about framing one of these in the Center.
intelligently: (ᴛʜɪʀᴛʏ ɴɪɴᴇ)

[personal profile] intelligently 2016-06-29 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Why not. It's always nice learning something new.

( Especially in a place like this )
stefanged: (rare smile)

Yeah, I get it. New languages are--

[Wait, she said yes. Stefan blinks back surprise.]

Um, I mean, that's awesome. We'll have to set times, and our translators do the speech thing like magic, but I'll start you on the alphabet and we'll work our way up.

I taught myself archaic Latin, it'll be fine.

( Just to prove the point that she did agree. It'll be fun, Stefan. She's a nerd really )

How shall we do it? Like where, and when.
stefanged: (gentle glance)

[personal profile] stefanged 2016-07-10 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that would depend on where you'd want to meet. I'm usually in the Interfaith Center when I'm not here.

[At least he's honest about being religious.] What would work best for you?
