[ kate's surroundings are, quite evidently, a lush little corner of málum. the neon-y blue tinge of the bar's decor casts its colour over her features. there's a tall, impressively concocted cocktail at her elbow. ] I mean, I know I do. So here's how it goes: you tell me anywhere you'd rather be but here, with the caveat that it can't just be a home. I think it's safe to say that home is a very understandable answer, but it's also a little too achingly realistic for my purposes. So pick somewhere else. Pick Ibiza. Pick Iceland, if you want.

[ his eyes practically sparkle, like he's about to share the map to a hidden treasure. he leans in close, as if he really cares to make sure no one in the bar could possibly hear it, and whispers in her ear. ]

[ she accepts that whisper with a grin. like the thief? glitch was one of the top merc/thieves in the world, kate thought. but she wasn't about to rain on his (frankly adorable) alias parade. she pats his shoulder. ]

[ the fleet is already raining all over his parade by calling the augment fuck ups glitches, it's covered. he's a hacker, it's a good name for him, he feels! ]

Right? It's pretty brilliant. [ smiling excitedly!! ] Your turn.

You realize I did say maybe, right? [ she ALMOST feels bad. might have to come up with a juicier secret to share just to make up for this. ]

You played me? [ he is really trying his hardest to look hurt. the natural puppy look helps. the intense desire to laugh doesn't. ] I thought we were friends, not cool, Kate, not cool.

You're easily played. [ ... ] But how about I make it up to you by telling you something no one else in the fleet really knows. Will that make it up to you, Glitch?

[ hell, clint probably didn't even know it. he was dead at the time. ]

Before I got given my code-name, the team stuck me with Hawkingbird. Which would be embarrassing enough on its own, if it wasn't additionally cringe-worthy 'cause it's basically the names of two other Avengers squished together.

he leans back, so he can look at her face -- she doesn't seem like she's kidding which is at once glorious and unfortunate because it's really hard to hold the laughter in. ]

Which Avengers? Hawkeye and Mockingbird?

[ it sounds like the most logical choices here but, this is a world where squirrel girl exists, who can tell. ]

You bet. [ voice dry; eyes squinted. ] They used to be married, but -- uh, that has nothing to do with the why of it. Mostly, when me and the Young Avengers first raided the old HQ for our gear I ended up taking both Mockingbird's and Clint's stuff.

Not a very inspired name. I'm glad it got changed.

[ ok he'll give himself a sec to being excited over guessing correctly! ]

...you guys really need a designated namer, that's pretty lame. Hawkingbird doesn't even make sense, unless you're a theoretical physicist who transforms into a bird -

That's why me and Cassie became the designated namers, in time. [ ... ] The other guys were just trash at it.

Who's Cassie? Which names did you come up with?

[ will he ever stop asking questions? ...no. the answer to that is no. ]

Cassie's...[ cassie's a toughie, because she died. and sure, she also un-died, too. but considering kate believe she's partially at fault for the tragedy in the first place?

yeah. cassie's a toughie. ] She's a friend. Ex-hero, though. She was part of the original Young Avengers line-up, and was more publicly known as Stature.

[ ... ] She could get big. Like, real big.

[ he can tell he hit a nerve though, so he'll give her hand an apologetic squeeze, before taking it to spin her again. ]

She really was. [ a thoughtful pause as she completes her spin. kate smiles. ] She still is. She may not have her powers any more, but she's still great.

Of course she is, powers aren't what make a hero.

Definitely not. [ and now she beams. ] But Cassie's mom didn't much like her being part of the Young Avengers when she was powered. So now, well...

She'll make her way. She's still young.

Heroes always do.

[ he beams back at her; he really believes that. if it's someone kate thinks so highly of - there's no doubt in his mind that she'll do plenty of amazing things in her life, whether she's a superhero, or just an ordinary real life hero. ]

As for names, [ she raises her voice over a burst of melodic brass, ] the team also had Vision, Iron Lad, and Patriot. I had nothing to do with those names. Hulkling and Wiccan were part of it too, but...I guess they're fully fledged Avengers now.

[ she might be the teeniest bit jealous. ]

Vision as in -- a version of the captain of the Windrose?

[ he knows they're from different realities - but he likes vision. a lot. ]

-- and good job on not picking those names. [ because wow. ]

So similar to the Windrose's captain that I knew him on sight. [ -- another dead teammate, but she doesn't let her smile falter. ] Not that much else is the same. He and I come from very different worlds.

That's gotta be so weird -- I'm so glad I haven't met any twins so far.

It's the same with Kitty, if I'm honest. [ and she may as well be. ] I mean, I never met her back home -- but I bet Clint has. It's not like anyone involved in the biz doesn't know who Shadowcat is.

[ all the stories from kitty's world are depressing as hell. he can't ask her of tales of adventure any more than she can ask him for fond family moments. ]
