[Alright, so technically he was warned that this might not be entirely wise, but whatever, nothing ventured, nothing gained. And the warning came from someone who hails from a world with evil inventor supervillains, and this place is totally different. It's fine. This will be just fine.

The comm clicks on to reveal a corner of the Paisley's engineering room, where a couple of boxes of spare parts and tools have been stacked and labeled nearby. Kirito plops himself on the floor in front of it, offering an awkward wave.]

Hey, this is a general shout-out to the engineers of the fleet- not just the ones with engineering augments, but specifically people who like to experiment with tech, invent stuff, that sort of thing. Don't know about you, but I've been working mostly on my ship, and it's getting a little crowded, so I'm putting together a more official lab on the Iskaulit. It'll really barebones, but that's the point of this.

Anyone interested in contributing? We could get some tables and set up a decent workshop for more people. It might be cool to have a general area where some of us can work together, swap ideas, maybe get some experience with fields other than whatever we specialize in. I know I've got a lot to learn, and I'd like to see more of what's out there.

While I'm at it, does anyone have experience with building furniture? Or even making cushions? We're gonna need a lot for another project I'm working on.

These are what I remember from the droids I've encountered from my universe.

I would have built them myself but things work differently here. With your help though, we could get these droids up in not time! [ A slight pause gives away this as an afterthought. ] Then they can help us set up a working space.

These look great! Like something out of sci-fi.

I don't know what that is. Some of these are military-grade droids. Let's ... not go to those right away until I can think of a way to retrofit the cannons for something more useful here.

Wait, here -- [ he pulls two pieces together and place them vertically next to each other ] This is the design for the protocol droid I built when I was nine. I know every bolt and wire of him. Let's start with this first.

A protocol droid? What do they do? It doesn't look very sturdy...

[It just looks like a person.]

[ He rest his hands on the edge of the table, hangs his head and sighs. ]

It's the schematic for a class three droid, a 3PO unit. They're capable of facilitate sentient relations and duties. We probably won't be able to find a communications module, nevermind a linguistic module. But we can retrofit it! As a service droid!

[ The thought of 3PO doing minor service work makes him snort-laugh ]

Hmm... for mobility's sake, it would be easier if we took a couple of these designs and combined them... I mean, with the tech and materials we've got, making a droid that can move at a decent pace on two spindly legs would be a nightmare. It'd just tiptoe around and fall over. But if we paired it with one of these--

[He unfolds one more like a R2 unit and gestures.]

--That'd be faster and more stable, I bet. Just alter the upper body.

[ he laughs then coughs slightly. again the thought of 3PO comes to him and oh god the complaining that dumb droid would spew out each day. he can almost hear it. he misses it, surprisingly. ]

Right. You got a point. We could replace it with a tripod wheels but that's going to be extra power and material. [ and it would be kinda lame looking, c'mon kirito! ] Maybe we could use an unipod wheel, if we can set up circuitry for gyro-balance.

[ he sketches it out. ] What do you think? These are going to need something balance it either way.

[Kirito considers the design for a moment, scratching idly at his chin.]

I think we'd have to either increase the size of the wheel or make sure it's not too top-heavy... it looks like it could fall really easily, and I doubt we'll be able to get the tech to give it any kind of automatic stabilizer. If we start with a simplified design and just make it so the AI chip is removable, we can always upgrade the body as we get more materials.

Let's start small and simple then. We won't need a big power source, and we can scale up once we have something we like. If we even need to.

[ he gives kirito a hearty slap on the back. just like he does with stephen. and it probably doesn't hurt because he's using his flesh hand! ]

It's going to take forever to get the parts we'll need for this, you know.

[Heck, they don't even know what planets they'll be visiting in the future and what kind of tech it'll have. He's stocked up on the last few, but even so, the selection isn't fantastic.]

I used to savage for parts all the time. If I needed something a bit better, or just my own, it was in the junkyard and I made it work.

Ah, really? That's awesome, I'll leave it in your hands, then. The scavenging thing is new to me, I used to just go to the store and buy the parts I needed back home.

[The most scavenging he's done is monster drops or treasure hunting in MMOs, but those were for weapon and equipment parts, and he'd never had much of a role in the creation part there.]
