[The video pops up with Adalwolfe's face centered in the camera, but with the background moving behind him, clearly showing the familiar corridors of the Iskaulit. He's making his way to his new job at Málum as bartender.]

So I noticed on the list of scheduled lectures posted a bit ago that there are several on magic, not to mention several people I've spoken with having positive or relaxed reactions to its use. It's incredibly strange to me that everyone is so open and accepting of this, considering the doctrine regarding magic in my home of Thedas, so it begs the following question and I hope at least someone from outside of Thedas will indulge me:

What is magic like on your world? Is it regulated? Does everyone have the ability to use it, or only a small number of people? Are there prejudices that go along with that.

Ah, well, I suppose that's more than one question. Still, if you're willing to talk about it, please feel free to respond to this post and I'll get back to you when I'm finished with work. Thank you!

[The video clicks off.]

Action

It's only a short walk from the hanger to the bar, but Adalwolfe takes his time since he can't watch where he's going very well as he's recording on his device. Which could lead to all kinds of problems. He seems to be avoiding walls okay, but if a person, say, came out of a corridor nearby or happened to step in front of him at just the right time before he put down the little screen, he might just bowl right into them, or walk right past without noticing a mischievous foot out for him to trip over. Honestly, he's an open target. Or at least seems like it...

[Well, that's new. Crowley pulls a face at that, pointing at the aforementioned lip. ]

So I can see. Did you walk into a wall, or someone's fist?

Something like that.

[Mostly the fist.]

It's nothing to worry about, I took care of it.

[By which he means he's trying to just let the whole thing go and maybe go back to avoiding Riona again.

Because that worked out so well.

With a small huff, Adalwolfe moves past Crowley and into the bar.]

I'm sure you did.

[That tone could either be construed as genuine sympathetic or horribly patronising. It's probably the latter, though. Crowley wanders through after him, looking bored with the entire thing already. ]

You want that fixed up? It'll probably put the customers off, looking like you've being in the soft version of Fight Club.

[Oh, fuck it, he'll do it anyway. He snaps his fingers and just like that, the split lip is healed- like it was never there in the first place. Crowley examines his fingernails idly. ]

There we go. Much better.

[Sounds partonising to him, but he reasons that it should be, probably. It's a very thin lie.]

No, I-

[Then Crowley does it anyway and Hawke fixes him with an irritated squint.]

So you're a mage, then?

[It felt vaguely similar to spirit healing, only instead of knitting things back into place, it was a if his face just didn't remember it was supposed to be injured.]

[Wolfe learned an important lesson today. Crowley is kind of a dickbag. He laughs at the question, a real barking laugh. He's clearly very amused by the idea.]

A mage. That's cute.

[It's been ages since someone's called him a mage. ]

No. I'm a demon.

That's hardly amusing.

[Hawke scowls deeply, the human equivalent of a dog with hackles raised.]

Let's just move on.

[He shakes his head and walks around behind the bar, taking a look at the various bottles and seeing what he recognizes and what he doesn't.]

[Oh, but Crowley knows that expression only too well, and rolls his eyes behind his shades. Always with this. ]

Oh, you're one of those sorts. Well, I'm not joking. I am a demon. Not one that's going to murder you horribly or possess you or...whatever else you think demons do because that's both messy and time consuming. I really can't be bothered with that kind of bollocks.

[He'll lean languidly on the bar, watching him.]

But if that's going to be an issue you're welcome to jog on elsewhere. I can do without the headache of worrying if one of my employees is going to try to off me because of what species I happen to be.

I'm not going to try and off you.

[He sounds annoyed. Honestly, he'd tried to just pass it off. It wasn't enough to just dismiss the whole thing and move on? He's hardly in any sort of mood to have a theological debate with a demon of all things.]

So you're a demon. I've already made a deal to work for you anyway.

[He picks up a bottle and pretends to read the label.]

I honor my bargains. I also just don't have the energy to care whether you're a spirit or a demon or even some kind of liquor selling fairy godmother. This isn't Thedas, I understand the rules are different here, so if you treat me like anyone else, I'm inclined to do the same.

[Which half his brain is railing against considering he'd grown up with 'Demons Bad' practically plastered on the inside of his eyelids, but what he said is true. The rules are different here.

He puts the bottle back.]

Just don't use your magic on me again. I thought being a little roughed up added to my allure.

[He smirks, cracking jokes, but that doesn't mean he's any less on guard.]

[Crowley takes a moment to watch him quiet, one eyebrow arched above his sunglasses. He seems to be taking a measure of Adalwolfe's worth. Which...is probably what he's actually doing, really. ]

Hmmm.

Guess that's about as much as I can expect as of yet. And believe me, I have no intention of treating you any differently. You're working here, after all.

[That's no surprise, though it now has a level of foreboding that Adalwolfe isn't sure is actually there or he's just ascribing to the look. He tries to convince himself it doesn't matter what Crowley thinks of him, so long as he holds to his word regarding any attempts at possession.]

I've made mistakes before, judging people for what they are or for their beliefs before getting to know them well enough. In this crazy world with space travel and information dumped directly into your brain, I think it's fair to give even a demon the benefit of a doubt, no matter what I was taught.

[He won't let another misunderstanding lead to his losing a friend or ally again if its at all within his power.

He looks at Crowley with some gravitas.]

Now I have no idea what this 'Ti-kwillah' is over here, among other things. Do you mind giving me a rundown of foreign liquors?

Gosh, even a demon. Lucky me.

[Still, he can't really blame him. Even Crowley doesn't like other demons that much, they're kind of assholes. ]

Still, healthy attitude to take.

[With that, his smirk returns, as he leans down to pick up a bottle. ]

Tequila is delicious and also has the potential to turn a boring night into an amazing one. Here, lemmie pour you some.

[He goes out pouring some into a shot glass, plucking out a couple of limes from a glass jar on the side, and bringing out a salt cellar. ]

Now the idea is that you take a lick of salt on your hand, then you drink it in one, then you bite the lime. I don't really know why, it's just how it's done.

Alright. I was going to ask, but if that's just how its done...

[He's game. Especially to get a little sloshed. He hasn't had the best of evenings already but this can't possibly make it worse. And he's a little grateful for the healed lip now, if he's going to be licking salt.

Without much hesitation, Hawke taps some salt onto his hand and immediately licks it off, chasing with the shot and then scrabbling for a lime wedge with his eyes squeezed shut. Once he's bitten it and swallowed the juice, and once his pucker's subsided, he lets out a breath and a laugh.]

Whew! I've never had anything like that. Where is it from?

[See? Crowley is an excellent demon. He brings liquor and good times for all. He grins at Adalwolfe's reaction to it. ]

Great, isn't it? It's from Mexico, a country on Earth. It's great for mixing up to make cocktails.

Mexico. Huh.

[He echos Crowley, looking at the bottle again as he turns it around in his hands.

Then freezes, staring.]

Uhh... Now I've never heard of Mexico, obviously, so I have no idea if this is even a question I should bother asking but...

[A-hem.]

Is that worm supposed to be in there?

[Oh Wolfe, you poor, poor bastard. Crowley's grin widens. ]

Absolutely. It's there for flavour. Though...I wouldn't actually eat it unless that's your thing. It probably tastes awful as a bar nibble.

...Also it's largely a gimmick, but it's one the people like, so. Worms we shall have.

I can't imagine what people in Mexico are like if their gimmick is a worm in the bottle.

[Possibly something like the Hanged Man's patrons, considering some of the things he's found in their ale. The difference is they weren't put there on purpose. He thinks. Probably.

He turns back to the bottles.]

Let's see, what else doesn't look familiar...

[Whisky he knows, fruit liqueurs are easy enough to understand...]

Sake?

[As in "For the Maker's sake what is this?"]

Depends on the people, really. Much like everywhere, everyone's different.

[Yes, look at the delicious booze, learn it, live it, love it. Crowley laughs at that attempt at slaughtering the Japanese language. He tried. ]

Sa-kei.

It's a drink from Japan. Made from rice.

[He leans over to pour some in a little glass for Adalwolfe to try, waving a hand to encourage him to do just that.]

Japan? Must be a strange place, to make drinks out of rice.

[He downs the little cup like a shot, then licks his lips.]

It's sweet, and very smooth. Can't taste the rice at all, but it does taste different.

It's...an experience.

[He flashes a grin. ]

Yeah. It's pretty popular over there. Seen as we almost always have people from Japan- or some alternate thereof - on the Fleet, I try to make sure I keep it in. Plus there are the curious who want to try it. Those too.
