[ for all she really doesn't appreciate waking up somewhere entirely unknown, barriss handles it well. she checks for her lightsaber, then for any lingering effects of being drugged, and then for communication devices. ah. making sure it's not broadcasting, just in case, the green jedi spends her first few hours aboard the marsiva investigating what she can. it's not much, but methodically going through everything she can access makes her feel a little bit better, at least. she's solitary, for the most part, unless eye contact is made, as soon as it becomes apparent that none of these people are her captors.

it's only once she's established that that barriss goes back to the network, presenting herself for a clearly carefully worded message. ]

At this point, it's quite apparent that we're nowhere near the planet I was last on. In fact, this isn't known space to me. [ she sounds like that's a big deal. she may or may not have a good handful of star charts from home memorized, just in case. ] So we're captive, but why?

And more importantly, who does a person have to negotiate with to get back to Republic space?

[ she's pretty sure she can kick their ass if it means getting back to coruscant, she means. ]

[ Oh. Well. This has the possibility of being potentially awkward. Still . . . he squints at the screen. She doesn't seem like the girl who blew up the Temple. Granted, that's what made it so hard to believe to begin with. Though his feelings on Barriss were not as complex as Ahsoka's or bitter like Anakin's. For him, Barriss represents his fight with the Council and those long hours of trying to convince them of innocence.

He sighs. Anakin would not be pleased and Obi-Wan had a sinking feeling he would be playing damage control once more. ]

Hello Barriss.

[ she's starting to feel her conflicts with the jedi order weighing on her, yes, but they're still carefully guarded- as carefully guarded as they will be until anakin corners her, admittedly, but she's not to the point of needing to act on them yet. so obi-wan kenobi is still a good thing to barriss, a symbol of good that she would trust nearly as much as she would trust her own master. ]

Master Kenobi. [ a nod of her head stands in for her usual curtsey of greeting. ] I hope it wouldn't be rude of me to say that I'm glad I wasn't the only Jedi brought here.

[ He tilts his head lightly in acknowledgement. Everything seemed fine . . . which means she came from an earlier time. ]

I think that's a reasonable sentiment considering the circumstances we find ourselves in. Are you all right?

I am, now that I'm starting to wrap my head around this whole Fleet business. And yourself?

[ yes, this is more reassuring than anything. kenobi is stable, always, in her mind. and stable is good. ]

I'm handling it. Better than most.

[ Ahsoka thrives. Anakin flounders. And Obi-Wan does what he's always done, keep the peace. While he has made small personal allowances with the depth of knowledge he know possesses of the future, he hasn't changed all that much. ]

You won't have to stay on the ship for very long at least. And there's a decent planet worth exploring.

[ He pauses, realizing that it sounds odd phrased like that. Like a vacation. Jedi don't have vacations. He lets it lie for now. ]

Yes, so I've heard. Shore leave.

[ if she says it like finn did, like the clones would, then it's just another war thing and it's not really vacation. another war thing, they can handle. ]

I'm glad to hear you're doing well, though, Master. Even if you... [ ah, what's the word choice? ] Even if the situation is a tough one.

[ He doesn't correct her. These things take time. And Obi-Wan knows better than to force the issue - especially with a Jedi.

After all, isn't he just like that? ]

Even if the situation changes, what we're meant to do does not. I find there is always need for a Jedi, in any galaxy.

Of course. [ she says it like it's not something she needed to hear. in a way, it isn't. barriss doesn't disagree with the concept of jedi, just the current execution.

maybe here, she can do it right, if it's not war things. ]

I didn't pass my trials for nothing. I promise I'll continue to be the best Jedi I can be here. And if you have any guidance for me, I'm all ears.

[ Obi-Wan finds himself hesitating. Knowing what he does, how should he act? There's little point in blaming someone for actions taken in the future. But those doubts must have festered for a long time, to culminate in such a brutal act. He doesn't want to believe that of her - of Luminara's protege.

How well would you sleep, knowing that I failed you?

The future is no longer a secret. Out of all of them, Obi-Wan holds the most cards and knows Anakin's secret name. ]

I think you might want to try exploring other options as well. The ideal of a Jedi isn't meant to be rigid. Our circumstances forced us to be. But here, our circumstances have changed.

But, regardless of circumstances, a Jedi should be confident in her beliefs, should she not? Being able to be flexible shouldn't affect our core.

[ barriss has her own definition of flexible, but she doesn't see how it might differ from anyone else's. comparing her ideals to reality and being unable to find an accord between the two is a problem she has, if obi-wan catches it at any point. but then, he's already heard it from her. ]

[ He agrees easily. ] It shouldn't.

But even the core of us can be disturbed. It's been a long war, Barriss. Take advantage of what we have here.

Yes, Master. [ it's automatic acquiescence, something she's always been good at. ]

But I still want to do good here, if there's any room at all for that. I feel it is my duty. Especially considering just how long and violent the war has been.

[ If he winces, he disguises it carefully and moves forward, as if nothing strange has been spoken. ]

And I'm sure there'll be plenty of opportunities for that. I never seem to run out of work here.

While I'm not glad to hear that, I do hope that I can help share some of that responsibility. Jedi are always needed, as you said.

Thank you for that, Master Kenobi. [ the gentleness is noted, enough that her genuine appreciation for the gesture is obvious even over video. ]

I'm grateful that I'm not alone here.

[ And that's the key point isn't it? Obi-Wan had Anakin, Ahsoka and even Padme. In a distant manner, he has Poe and Finn as well. Barriss . . . has no one. Ahsoka is most likely reeling from seeing her friend here. Anakin certainly won't take her side.

How could Obi-Wan turn her away? ]

No. You are certainly not.

[ practical, polite barriss. it's not if she needs him, because she won't, but if some external force requires her to be in touch with him. ]
