Winter & Vision's (not so) Excellent Adventure

[ This thread is going to serve both as a canon update to post Captain America: Civil War for Winter and Vision, but also be used as a monthly catch-all with prompts. ]

[ It's been a few weeks since they've landed, so Winter's finally gotten over most of his initial uneasiness. Enough to finally venture into the forest for a hike and get the lay of the land. He's familiar with the beach and the markets, and he's heard things about the forest and a certain tree, so he needs to see for himself if the rumors are true.

It's relatively peaceful, and he hasn't come across anyone else yet. He's making his way around a fallen tree when an animal jumps out of a nearby bush and startles him. Winter stumbles back, and his immediate reaction is to reach out with his left hand to steady himself. Unfortunately it's still broken, so it doesn't cooperate like it's meant to. Which means that he trips and falls. Down a steep hill. Only having one functioning arm means he raises his right to shield his head until he can manage to slow down or run into something. Which is exactly what he does before his head smacks solidly against a hard surface. ]

[Meanwhile, the Vision is similarly engaged in heading toward the tree to investigate it. He’s heard you need someone’s hand to hold in order for the magic to work, but his curiosity has the better of him and he’d like to observe it in action first. A scuffle down below his flight path catches his attention, and he swoops into the forest to see what’s going on just in time to see Winter, of all people, taking a tumble down a steep hillside. He rushes over to try and intercept the man before he seriously hurts himself, and in his rush he miscalculates his own density and slams down hard enough that Winter smacks his head against the Vision instead of catching himself safely.

Oops.

The impact is enough to snap the Vision’s head back and hit it against the tree he’d been trying to prevent Winter from hitting. So now there are two enhanced individuals knocked out on the forest floor. How very impressive.]

[This one's out like a light and won't respond for a while. He looks a little bit ridiculous there on the ground, but probably not as bad as Winter since he didn't crash through the underbrush or tumble in the dirt. Yay?]

[Huffing, she moves a little closer and crouches down beside them and assesses the damage. She touches Vision's shoulder lightly.

Neither of them better need medical attention, because she isn't going to be able to carry them back to a settlement on her own.]

[ Winter stirs with a quiet groan. It feels like he was hit by a truck, and his head feels like it's stuffed with cotton. It takes him a few moments to drag his eyes open, but when he does, the canopy of trees isn't familiar. Something's not right.

He looks around and spots Natasha. Something else amiss. This isn't where he was before. Where he should be. Heaving himself upward, he puts a hand over his temple. ]

What happened?

[ God, his head hurts. ]

You tell me. I heard something crashing through the trees and found the two of you in a heap. From the look of it though, I'd say you took quite a fall.

[She tips her head. It's not exactly relief she feels that he's all right, but it does make things easier.]

You still in one piece?

[reconstitution]

Mmn..Yeah. I think so.

[ He manages to climb unsteadily to his feet, moving away from Vision. Things are starting to come back, and he can't help but feel a certain way about the guy. He's got no qualms with Vision here, though. Things are conflicting ]

[ It feels like there's too much going on in his head at one time. ]

Was walking and I must've spooked an animal. Tripped and fell.

And run right into him, from the look of it.

[She answers after a pause, considering how he answers, how he carries himself. Her instincts say he's not lying, though she doesn't let herself become married to that idea.]

You sure you're okay?

[reconstitution]

Feels like it, too.

[ There are things he's got in his head now that he didn't before, and it's like a breath of fresh air and a massive weight on his chest at the same time. He doesn't know how to explain it. ]

Augment must have glitched again. Or-- I don't know. I remember things that I didn't before.

[Natasha moves in closer to Vision, touching his shoulder gingerly.

Looks like a TKO, though.

She looks up at Barnes' words though, her expression blacking to hide her interest.]

What kind of things? From before?? [Considering Bucky's memory, it's not an unreasonable assumption.] Or something else...?

[reconstitution]

From before. [ A pause. ] What is the last thing you remember before coming here?

[ He doesn't really want to reveal too much without really knowing if it's real or just his mind fucking with him again. ]

[He's not the first person she's had ask her that question, and considering the context, she understands why he would. Still it's strange to have someone ask. And it goes against her instincts to reveal too much.

Her answer, when she gives it, is short.]

Sokovia.

[reconstitution]

[ Somehow, he knows about Sokovia. Or at least read about it. He nods his head in response. What sort of time frame does he even give her in return for what he knows. It's certainly more than it was in Washington. ]

I know about that.

And you didn't before.

[It's not a question, though she leaves it open to correction if she's read him wrong.]

How long ago was Sokovia?

[reconstitution]

About twelve months? [ It's a rough estimate, at least. ]

[Natasha's expression clouds subtly at that, not with fear but the idea of different timelines is still strange to her, but this is the first time she's come across someone from their world who was ahead of her. That made it stranger somehow.

She was in danger of being at a disadvantage.]

It happens just like that? You fall and hit your head, and suddenly you remember more?

[That puts off the question of what happened in that year.]

[reconstitution]

I guess so? I've heard it happens sometimes. Never saw it for myself, though. [ He shrugs a shoulder. ]

Now we know for sure. [ He rubs idly at the side of his head. He hopes this goes away shortly. He's through with his head feeling out of sorts. ]

Looks like.

[She glances down at Vision. He doesn't seem inclined to wake up on hi own, which is worrying.]

Should I bother asking what happens next? After Sokovia?

[If she sounds distracted, it's because she wonders if she's going to have to carry Vision back. And what he'll remember when he wakes up.]

[reconstitution]

[ He glances at Vision, too. Hopefully the guy's okay. Winter debates on what to disclose to her, picking his battles. ]

The Accords. Legislation to keep the Avengers in check. There's a big fight about it.

[ Oh, and he was framed for murder, so that's cool. But not an unfair accusation. Just.. Not this time. ]

[outstandingbalance]

[Her lips tighten, but she can't be surprised. They aren't beholden to SHIELD anymore. Without oversight and some very public destruction, it was only a matter of time before something had to give.]

There would be.

[The question is what he says when he calls it a fight. If they're lucky, it's debates, hearings, more trips to Capitol Hill and not flying bullets.]

There's more going on that just that.

[ But he doesn't think he should tell her. There's nothing either of them can do about it while they're in the Fleet, in any case. Not that there's much she could do back home while he's holed up in Wakanda on ice and she's... wherever she is. ]

Always is.

[He can't think Natasha will leave his comment at that. She doesn't intend to try to drag the information out of him—and she considers just how far she should push—but she has to at least probe the topic a little.

It's gentle, giving him room to back out if he wants.]

Anything I should know about?

[reconstitution]

Someone's going to use it as leverage to cause a rift.

[ A rift in what, she can probably put that together herself. Of everyone, she at least has the most level head, even if they were on opposite sides for the most part. ]

That sounds ominous.

[The words are almost flippant, but her tone isn't. She doesn't know what he means exactly, but she doesn't have trouble coming up with possibilities. She's as aware of anyone the divisions that exist within the Avengers, between the Avengers and SHIELD, between SHIELD and the military... and any of them could be trouble.]

[reconstitution]

Probably better that way.

[ All of it is trouble, and the military, as well as SHIELD, don't necessarily have people's best interests 100% at heart. There may still be people working both sides, though most of HYDRA should have been extinguished after Washington DC. ]

[outstandingbalance]

You're gonna have to be a little clearer which part of that is better.

[reconstitution]

Sounding ominous without saying too much.

[ He shrugs a shoulder. ] Not that you'd remember when you went back.

Or, at least I didn't. Didn't remember until I came back. Or uh-- woke up.
