[Sam's very much content with what he got from the giving tree. But of course, in the calmness of the world around them, he can't help but wonder more on everyone else — his memory box sits on his bed, some of the contents sitting outside of the box, some of which are pictures of his family, of odd things like a fake amulet, and a retirement home brochure. There's more in there just waiting to be dug through for the sake of nostalgia, but first...]

ATTACHMENT: THE_GIVING_TREE

You know, being a Silverstein fan, one of my favorite books growing up was The Giving Tree.

I don't really know why. I mean, it's a depressing story, you know? Hell, it messed with me as a kid, I mean real little, and I remember asking why that tree kept giving up parts of itself for such a jerk. I get it when he's a kid, sure. Kids are kids. But the rest... I always remembered how good the tree was — and how I swore I would never be such an ass if I ever met that tree. Crossed my heart.

I guess I sort of did meet a giving tree on this planet, and the tree gave me some... really, really great stuff.

[He holds up some pictures, the one on top a clear picture of him as a baby with his family. He's so very pleased to have these here.

Maybe he'll offer some to Dean; he's not sure if his brother is interested in photos anymore, but... screw it, he'll offer anyway.]

[Her expression softens. Not quite a smile but it is a tender sort of look. She imagines such a picture would be important to him. It would be to her.]

Cute. You can barely see the horns. [Too far? He did share a lot with her about being "wrong" before. But she wouldn't consider horns wrong and it was really just a troll joke he started.]

[Aw, Kitty. He'll try to mask just how uncomfortable that comment makes him. Not for the reason she'd think — well, not entirely, but it's not like he tells a lot of people he's been a vessel for the devil. But he clears his throat and goes for a tiny, sheepish smile.]

I definitely gain a few extra feet over the years.

[She misses her faux pas.] I know you mean height, but now I'm just picturing you with a huge shoe budget.

[Good, good, he moves along easily.]

That's not that far off. When I finally started growing like a weed, I was -- seventeen? The hand-me-downs from my brother weren't cutting it anymore, for sure. We share shirts and stuff sometimes, but shoes? No way, no how.

['Cus he's Bigfoot, SURPRISE.]

Hard to make the clothing stretch that way. You should have really been more careful about growing. [Smiling.]

You know you're at least a foot shorter than my husband.

...Ex-husband. [Smooth.]

[He laughs in good humor.]

Must've been great to sit on his shoulders. I met someone way taller than me, before. He was also a skeleton.

[A pause.]

... He wasn't a jerk, was he? Your ex.

He was the biggest and gentlest guy I'd ever met. [Gentle for her world wasn't what it might mean in other worlds, but he had a sensitive soul.] ...Until he wasn't.

[She shrugs a little, but she can't really dismiss it so easily, but she'll change the subject and that's close enough.] Skeleton sounds like an interesting story though. Back home?

[A slight, sympathetic smile.]

Sorry.

[Sam never apologizes if he doesn't mean it, man.]

Not quite, though I wouldn't be surprised if I ran into a skeleton.

It was actually in another world; he ate a special kind of fruit that made his spirit continue even after his body passed away. So now he's, um. Just a walking suitful of bones. But he's... got a good attitude about it?

[A nod of thanks.]

Sounds like an impressive thing to have a good attitude about. Another world like this one?

Not quite. I was in another world like this one before, and I jumped worlds after we stopped what was holding us there. I went to their world from there; they had been trapped like I was before that.

It was... kind of a well-needed vacation, really.

Lots of world hopping. This is my second home away from home. Gets a little easier each time though. Barely any culture shock at all when I landed here from the prison.

— Prison?

Yeah. MarinaNova. It was a small city under a dome under the Saylar Ocean which no one had ever heard of. You know, your standard prison with a beach and arcade and bars, but the kind you drink at. Where rehabilitation means things like group therapy sessions where you can only tell the truth or suddenly getting a rabbit tail because why wouldn't that be good for rehabilitation?

(OOC: I feel like she told him she'd met another Sam and Dean before, so she probably mentioned it at least vaguely but she might have avoided "prison" part at the time and I don't remember either so that's totally how it happened!)

Oh, wow.

And I thought my short trip to prison was crappy.

This place any better?

Um, I mean, I'm happy here. I have someone from home and people I care about. The actual mechanics of everything and places... [She shurgs] That's about the same I guess. It's different but really no better or worse. I would have said they toy with us less here, but I feel like that's increasing with more glitches.

[He winces.]

Yeah... Seems like they're turning up the heat a little.

Can't let things get boring I guess. Gotta keep viewers tuning in. If that's really what's happening out there.

Could all be a big rouse, huh?

Could be anything really. We only have their word on how and why things are like they are. And since my last place was all virtual reality so realistic you couldn't tell the difference it makes it easy to doubt everything.

We just need to stick to it, keep an eye out.

Count a few blessings that the place isn't a shriveling, creepy horror show.

Are you sure? Wouldn't we both have more experience with that? [Kidding. Well, it's the truth, but she still prefers it not like that.]

Ha. I have a lot of experience in miserable surprises, but I think I'd like to have a vacation from that for a while. At least another few months.

[She smiles.] Fair enough. And something good happened. [With getting that photo.] So maybe we just leave it at that for now. And I'll leave you to your adoring admirers. See you around, Sam.
