the legends goes that the village had been on the bring of being attacked for weeks, caught in between two warring forces. the people prayed every day for their warriors and sons to return home but the only men to arrive at the village were two brothers who claimed they left the war efforts to take care of their ailing mother.
it was not long after that the village was attacked. the only people in the village were young daughters and elderly folk unable to fight, and the village began to pray for mercy from the spirits instead, believing that they somehow wronged them. but the brothers, without a word and without being asked, stepped forward to protect the village. it is said that the fighting went on for three days and three nights, but the two brothers alone were enough to fight off an entire force. they were immediately praised for their kindness and bravery, and word was sent to the elders of a neighboring village.
but when one of the elders arrived to offer his own thanks and praises, the brothers were gone. and when they asked the mother where they had gone, she claimed that she had never had sons, and that no one but her young daughter had been caring for her.
from then on, the brothers would reappear at times of great need, usually when something needed protection. they would arrive days before, claiming the same story of their ill mother, and would fight to protect the people they were with before disappearing once again. they never accepted anything in return for their good deeds, and would often be long gone before any elder could speak to them.
some believe that they are simply wandering spirits with a strong attachment to the earth, unable to rest until they are reunited with their mother in the afterlife. others think they are sent on behalf of the spirits, and that the "mother" they are there to care for is the earth herself. but people have been claiming to have seen them for the last hundred years or more.

and they do not, no. no one knows their family's name or where they originated, but they have been seen all over the country through the years.

Ferines lore is usually based directly on historical events, but this one might be interesting: legend used to tell of a miraculous stone known as the Tear of the Sea - or the Everlight. It could cure any disease and grant any wish. When I was very ill, my sister and a friend of ours left our village to find a piece of it and saved my life.
Another friend of mine found the original stone not that long ago after chasing it for years, and used its power to restore the sight of an old mentor. But it shattered after that, so it can't be used anymore.

[Technically the piece she had worked once and a little more, but...yeah, not going into that right now.]
