The . . . Trees?

[twicewed]

Telperion and Laurelin, the gold and silver Trees. [He seems brighter for a moment, his expression fond. The Trees are special like that.]

Would you like to hear that story? We should go to my quarters where it's comfortable, it's a long tale.

[beardstrokes]

[ His curiosity wins out. Obi-Wan always enjoyed the culmination of myths and facts. Deep down, he's always had a fondness for exploration and discovery. ]

All right. I suppose it would be rude of me to refuse.

[twicewed]

[Finwe grabbed the plate of cookies and cake to take with them as he lead the way back to his quarters.]

I hope you will like the tale though this will be the first I've shared our history with one of the Secondborn. I think it's fitting though, we can learn from each other.

[Given he didn't need to sleep Finwe had instead rearranged his quarters to make it more of a comfortable sitting space with pillows and folded blankets.]

Make yourself comfortable, when we tell tales it's all together. There is no formality.

[ Obi-Wan sits down carefully, straightening his robes with his hands. Formality may not be required, but he's been trained to behave formally. ]

Who are the Secondborn?

[twicewed]

Ah we should start at the beginning then.

[Finwe took a seat on a pillow, setting the plate of sweets between them.]

We should start in the beginning with Eru, our Creator, and the Music which shapes our world. All that was, all that is, and all that ever will be.

[beardstrokes]

I'm sorry, did you say Creator?

[ Because that's a little too fantastical, even for Obi-Wan. The Force is, in a way, a creator, but even the Force can't be given that kind of credit. ]

[twicewed]

Yes, Eru created the Ainur- the great holy spirits, first. And then that's when the Music was created, the Ainur joining with Eru to create all that was, all that is, and all that will ever be in our world through that harmony.

[He's just going to gloss over the discord for now, to keep things simple.]

[beardstrokes]

[ He leans back, listening carefully. A smart person doesn't interrupt a storyteller. ]

Now among the Ainur there are the Valar, the great spirits, and the Maia, the lesser ones. The Valar had their own realm, Valinor, and it was there they decided the world needed light. One of the Valar, Yavanna, Queen over growing things, sang the Trees into existence.

[For now, he'll gloss over the Lamps.] Telperion was the silver tree which bloomed during the first part of the day and then Laurelin, the golden tree, bloomed later. It gave Valinor constant, beautiful light.

[beardstrokes]

Does this Realm still exist?

[ Because it seems a little too good to be true. ]

[twicewed]

Of course, it's where we resided before coming here. I would often sit under the Trees with my first wife to bask in their light. And later my grandchildren loved to play under the Trees.

[beardstrokes]

That's amazing. Shame there's no way to picture it.

[twicewed]

You can, however, see the Treelight. Lean forward and look into my eyes.

[Even in the darkened room Finwe's eyes shine brightly, as does the glow around him.] There is a reason why we Elves are so bright- we were touched by Treelight. This glow, the light you see in my eyes? This is the Trees.

[beardstrokes]

I . . . ah, will take you word for it.

[ What was with it? He's rarely at a loss for words. ]

[twicewed]

Eru also created the Elves but we didn't wake in Valinor. Instead one of the Valar, the Lady Varda, collected the dew from the trees and placed the star in the skies to greet us on the distant shore of the land we woke upon.

[There is awe in his voice, the stars are special for the Elves.] I remember when I woke under the stars, they were breathtaking.

[beardstrokes]

But none of you have traveled among the stars until now.

[ He remembers that. What kind of experience did it show, to hold the stars in awe? For Obi-Wan, it was natural. A part of life. ]

[twicewed]

No, never. I have spoken to Lady Varda before, seen the stars around her, but to see her stars in the sky so close is something I am grateful for.

[beardstrokes]

I can't imagine what that feels like.

[twicewed]

The spirits in our world aren't simply abstract- we interact with them almost daily. I've walked with the King of the Valar- he has the sweetest birds who often joined us.

[And he's just going to gloss over the fact that the literal incarnation of chaos and darkness stayed with them for a bit for now.]

[beardstrokes]

I've only had one interaction with manifestations of the Force - and even then, I'm not sure they are what they seem.

[ The Force can obscure the truth. No matter how devoted Obi-Wan is to the Force, he's not blind to its mysteries. ]

They were . . . beyond comprehension.

[twicewed]

The Force? Is this the creator if your world?

[Finwe offered Obi-Wan another little cake before taking another for himself.]

What were they like?

[beardstrokes]

I suppose it could be called that. The Force is in all of us. It is the motion of fate, the life in our veins. It pulls and pushes events all around us.

[ He glances down at his plate. They were dead. And those deaths were felt, even though Obi-Wan only knew them for such a short time. Anakin's brief fall into the Dark, Ahsoka's death and Obi-Wan, holding the weapon of the Light and wondering why he had to carry weapons all his life. ]

Confusing. But I suppose I'm too human to understand.

[twicewed]

Ah I believe I can imagine it, somewhat. I believe there is something like that where I am from but it's the Music for us. It's in all of us, the Elves can hear it, it pulls us in and it's in everything around us.

[Finwe doesn't judge Obi-Wan for not understanding, sometimes it's difficult to grasp things that are bigger than them.]

It's nothing to be ashamed of. It means you are open to learning more and changing your perceptions.

[beardstrokes]

I'm hardly ashamed of that. I am always learning, after all.

[ Though he still regrets how it turned out. And what it meant for the rest of them. ]
