Action: Blue Fish's clinic!
When: All throughout the Solrius dragon plot and through the space flight to the next destination.

[So several RPG characters, a dragon, and two messianic figures walk into a planet.

Everything is suffering and tears, there's a lot of dead people, there's no punchline. But, hey, for the survivors, the Blue Fish's clinic is treating wounds and generally being a decent place to rest and recover and pray you don't see a dragon again. And for those who weren't involved, there's enough people bedridden here that there may just be someone you want to visit.]

Elemental control. [ He cracks a small smile. ] I'm a fire mage. Explosive focus, but I'm not about to play around with somethin' like that in a damn hospital. So, simple fire it is.

[Despite the bandages all over her face, she is basically lighting up.]

That's way different from mine, but I do a lot of elemental manipulation, too- Oh, um, sorry, my name is Nightingale, I'm a mage, we should compare notes.

[she's so excited for magic.]

[ He's totally lighting up, too. ]

Yeah, we definitely should. I'm Eithan - nice to meet you Nightingale. [ Beat. ] Even if it's while we're both beat-up. So what's your magic like?

It's, um...

[She pauses, thinking.]

Normally, it's aspecting my internal mana to create elemental effects, and I'm best with fire. Wind is the only one I can use outside of combat, though, everything else needs a target. Oh, and Flash, but I'd rather not blind everyone. But then I did something weird in my fight with Sorey, and now I don't understand anything anymore? I can make other things cast my spells? I have no idea what it is or how it works.

I should probably experiment and get back to you on that.

[Painkillers make her wordy, apparently.]

[ He's got no problem with wordy! Especially when he's curious about something. ]

Wow. Yeah, multiple elements isn't really a thing in my world. Mana's pretty specialized, and if someone's got an affinity for somethin', that's it.

... So wait, what happened against Sorey? Somethin' else cast your magic?

Aside from Wind and Flash, I've got...

[She has to think for a minute.]

Fire, Ice, Lightning, Quake, Sleep, I should have Poison but there's a pain in the ass there, Cure, Heal, Defense Up...

I may have sort of... loaded a spell into my staff? I'm still not entirely sure myself. And then I got my ass kicked before I could figure it out. Battles like that are very bad times to experiment.

[ He gives a low whistle. ]

Damn, that's a lot of stuff... Most of it's not even elements where I'm from, so that's really interestin'.

And yeah, generally speakin', battles against crazy strong things aren't the best time for experiments. But hey, that's over, so there's time now?

On one hand, that's true.

On the other, I think if I try to experiment right now, Doctor Crusher is going to be a much scarier boss fight than Sorey was.

[ Wince! ]

How long 're you in for, anyway? How bad is it?

[Nightingale would have likely ended up dating her healer had she not ended up in another world. Considering said healer also had a sadistic streak... It would have been interesting.

She's just not going to mention any of that, though, and just laugh.]

Not quite sure. It's pretty bad, so I'm here for a while, even if I can heal it a little.

The problem is I am very bad at healing.

... Like, how bad are we talkin'? Like end-up-doin'-the-opposite or somethin'?

What? No. That's not how magic works. Why does everyone think that? It just means it takes a lot more casts to get the same effect.

Well, there are wind types in my world who're better at makin' vacuums than breezes. It's kinda crazy. Didn't know if somethin' like that was how it went in your world.

[ And one of his closer friends is one of them! Whoops. He shrugs. ]

Well, that's different... Vacuum would just be moving the wind all away from a certain point, right? I've never tried it myself, but I could probably do it with practice.

Right. But... that's kinda my point. It's a kind of focus, where I'm from. Try to conjure up a tornado and create a vacuum instead? You figure out your focus is some sort of opposite. So maybe, try to heal someone before you realize your focus is somethin' off? Might be a problem. Wouldn't surprise me if I ever find out about a healer in my world that's actually better at, I dunno, makin' internal damage?

[ Beat. ]

Sorry. It's kinda cool comparin' notes like this, when things are apparently so different.

[ Looks like someone's not quite used to being such a nerd about something... but ever since coming here? His interest has definitely been piqued. ]

... I think we're using 'focus' to mean very different things here.

I agree, though. I like hearing about other systems... I figure if there's a way out of here, and a way to solve the Atroma problems, it's the weird areas where different systems of magic or technology from worlds interact in new ways. The gray areas in the rules that govern them that don't have a known solution...

[She's a huge nerd at magic at the best of times, but this place has set her off even more on it.]

... Yeah, probably. [ His smile turns sheepish and he pushes a hand through his hair. ] Focus is like... the specific way a person's able to use their magic. It's not the easiest thing to figure out, so knowin' your focus is what separates trained mages from just... someone playin' around with their element. I'll totally show you when there's not a chance of me detonatin' somethin' I shouldn't.

[ Eithan, don't grin about that, you doofus. ]

I think you're right, though. If worlds play by different rules, then here's no exception. I bet puttin' our heads together and takin' advantage of that gray area's definitely the way to go about it.

Yeah, we don't have that. But I like not detonating things that you shouldn't detonate.

We just need a meeting of mages around here, really.

We do. Doubt it'd be hard to get 'em all on board with the idea - at least most of 'em.

Might be hard to find a place for all of us to fit, though.

I'm sure some planet somewhere's got a big enough conference room. Or an open field, at the very least.

... Llllet's go with the open field. We're gonna be gathering a bunch of mages. Something is gonna get set on fire by the end.

[ Snort. ]

Especially if some of 'em don't get along... I haven't met everyone yet, I've got no clue who should or shouldn't be around whoever else.
