I didn't think I would grow older while I was still here. That is, we grow older each day, but I trust you all catch my meaning regardless. It's a strange thing, to gain a year so far from home.

[a pause.]

I don't wish for a celebration or any gifts, but one thing I would enjoy is to hear stories. Legends or fables from your world, or experiences that you yourself have had. I find this sort of thing fascinating, truly. I would be happy to reciprocate as well.

I do drink often, yes.

[she refills both of their glasses again] When I was younger, I'd spend a lot of time with dwarves. One must build a tolerance if one wishes to keep up with their drinking habits.

Dwarves?

[a laugh]

I imagine you could easily drink more than them. They're rather small, aren't they? It doesn't take much for them to become overwhelmed.

On the contrary - they're quite the drinkers. Their ale is some of the strongest I've ever had.

Not as strong as this, certainly.

[takes another sip]

I must wonder who introduced you to it.

No, not as strong as this.

[she tilts her head]

To this drink in particular? Charles did.

I see. You must be very fond of it.

[a pause]

But if I recall correctly, you promised me a story.

I like strong alcohol. [a shrug] The stronger the better.

[she may be an alcoholic]

That I did. What sort of story do you want? [she pauses] I do not know a lot of happy ones.

I would like to hear whatever you'd like to tell me.

You have to give me some direction, Lace.

That wasn't direction enough? Very well.

I'd like to hear about your village. Before... [the bad thing happen]

[her expression freezes for a moment before she sighs quietly]

Very well. Have I ever spoken of or shown you what they did for us when we came of age?

I don't believe you have, no.

[a pause of her own, taking that expression into note]

But I can request a different tale if you like.

[she shakes her head] It's fine. It's simply been a while since I've spoken of it.

[not this specifically, at least. Vaguely, but otherwise it's been months]

Our day of birth was still celebrated separately, but . . . in the middle of spring, the village would throw a celebration of sorts. For all the children who either had already turned fifteen, or would that year.

There would be a party for the celebration part. Afterwards, we would be gathered in our hall to accept our apprenticeships. They made a big deal out of it, because it was seen as us accepting adulthood . . . I think is how it is translated. Something like that, anyway.

And it meant a lot to us, because it meant that we would all be seen as equals. Even those of us who weren't quite at that age yet.

It seems like a wonderful tradition. Were you all able to choose your own apprenticeships, or was it something that was selected for you?

They were chosen for us, based on what we were good at. That is how I became the healer's apprentice - I was decent with magic.

I see. Were there any other festivals or celebrations in your village?

We would celebrate spring, and we would celebrate the beginning of the harvest season.

I do not - I don't remember if there were any others.

I see. Which celebration was your favorite?

The spring festival. It meant that winter was leaving and I would not have to hide indoors anymore.

Ah, that's right. I remember how much you dislike cold weather.

[a bit wryly] I spent most winters in my youth sick. I do have a valid reason despite simply hating it.

Oh! I don't think I knew that... How unfortunate. Do you have the same problem even now?

I think I only spoke to Kaito about it, because he saw a memory about it. [she shakes her head] I just get cold easily.

I'm glad for that, at least. Did it simply fade in intensity as you became older?

[she opens her mouth to respond but pauses, frowning.

After a moment more she shakes her head]

I - think it did, but I honestly did not pay it much attention. It . . . stopped being much of a concern.
