Huntress crew, this is your first mate, Sorey. ...due to certain circumstances, we are currently without a Captain. I'm acting as Captain now to fill the role, but if there are any interested parties, please contact me at your soonest convenience.

In the meantime, if there's anything that requires tending to, please don't hesitate to let me know. Any supplies we're short on, any concerns you may have about the status of the ship...I know we're at full capacity now, so if we start taking on extra passengers again we'll have to double up. And I'm also the ship's engineer, so please bring any technical problems you have to me.

[Sorey can be found both in engineering on the Huntress and at the Interfaith center on the Iskaulit. If your character can sense spiritual power and has run into him before, they may notice him lacking his usual protective/cleansing domain.]

Ah- right, I- [Just gonna shut up and flip the breaker, hitting the maintenance emergency lighting while he's at it to illuminate the tunnels and hatches more efficiently. Great. Apparently he not only tried to total a planet recently, but his lack of expertise may have almost blown up his ship.] Please show me what I did wrong.

[Or Kirito's just being really melodramatic about the air conditioning, who really knows.

He burrows into the hatch, giving it a more thorough examination, then grabs for his comm to look Sorey up on it.]

Have you got your comm with you? I'm gonna call you- there's no way we'll both fit in here, so it's easier if I run a video stream. And bring over your toolkit, I need more than just the wrench.

Good idea. [Sorey can barely get his shoulders all the way in there. Kirito's right, there's no way they'd both fit.

He sets his comm up nearby to stand and rolls over the entire tool chest, half of which he's still not sure how to use. At least he knows the names of stuff? Thanks for nothing, augment.]

Okay, ready. Let me know when you need something.

[Kirito doesn't ask for much, in truth- just the occasional tool switch and Sorey's complete, undivided attention. He walks Sorey through the steps of dismantling and cleaning that part of the system properly, keeping it greased, and avoiding that weird clicky-noise in the long term. He goes through the list of proper tools to use as well as their maintenance, and in truth he probably gives more detail than is necessary, but at least it comes hand-in-hand with a video demonstration, so if anything goes over Sorey's head at least he can learn by watching. And any questions he asks are answered, too.

He's just on his way out of the hatch when he notices a couple of stray wires hanging lose, though, and he immediately jerks his head out, eyes wide, and gestures.]

Okay, this- here, right here- you see those? Did you cut those wires?

[BECAUSE THEY SURE AS HELL DON'T LOOK RAT-CHEWED AND THAT IS... REALLY CONCERNING...]

[ARE THERE RATS UP HERE?????

Sorey balks at his urgency and sticks his head in the hatch, staring at the wires Kirito's gesturing to.]

I don't- [No, he does remember.] Oh- yes. I did. I thought they were for the overload circuit that I was trying to strip...

[there are rats everywhere, that's how ships work ~~also Dezel feeds them so they're thriving~~

Kirito can honestly only gawk at him, because what. what the hell.]

You cut it. You're kidding me.

[This guy seems like one of those earnest types. He's. Probably not kidding.

Goddammit.]

You disabled the emergency alarm system. You are so lucky your life support didn't shut down and kill everybody.

No. He's not going to blame a mystery woman for giving him random advice. He's the one who followed it. He's the one who blindly trusted a stranger, again, just because he didn't have anyone else around to tell him that maybe it's not a good idea.

Sorey clenches his fist tight enough that his glove squeaks and he bites his lip until it stings before he tries again.] Kirito- could you please teach me? Not everything right now, but if I could get lessons from you...I'll figure out a way to pay you for them. I just- I need to know what I'm doing, for sure, instead of trying to guess all the time.

[Kirito considers getting further into it - because this error was a huge deal - but he's... really not the paragon of virtue when it comes to getting people killed, and that's a sobering thought that forces him to back down. He knows what guilt looks like.

Deep breaths.]

You don't need to pay me, I don't mind teaching you. It's more important that we keep each other alive around here. Not like anyone else is going to help us.

[They sure as hell can't depend on the Atroma. They didn't even bother to give everyone a proper manual or anything. The augments can only help so much.]

Two rules: first, don't mess with any parts unless you know exactly what it does. If you're going to learn anything, the first step is to know what each and every part of the engine is. Use labels if you can't memorize it.

[He lifts his comm.]

Second, ask for help if you don't know the right way to fix something. Guesswork is fine when you're messing with the little stuff, but life support? Shields? Propulsion? Breaking any of that can get people hurt. A ship has a life of its own- you need to take proper care of it, or it won't take care of you.

[Sorey nods, and though his heart burns with shame and his mind wants to take him down all the roads of you could have and reckless mistake he denies himself that luxury. At least, for now. He shouldn't waste Kirito's time with his guilt, not when he's doing him such a huge favor.]

Understood. I won't touch anything I don't know without calling you first for help.

...Okay.

[Well, as long as that's sorted, he can relax a little bit. He pauses to listen closely to the system, then fishes a few wire connectors and pieces the emergency system back together.]

It doesn't sound like anything else is in critical condition, and I work better with my own tools, so I'll come back in a couple of days with my box and we can do a full system exam. Top to bottom, every detail. After that we can work out a schedule and start from scratch.

Okay. That works for me. [Like he's going to complain when he's finally getting some desperately-needed help with this.]

Are you all right with Natalie being here sometimes? She doesn't really like being left alone.

I don't mind unless we're doing something potentially dangerous. I'd hate to see her accidentally get hurt or something.

Yeah, I'm definitely with you there.

[Sorey casts another helpless look over engineering before steeling himself and dropping in a low bow to Kirito.] I can't thank you enough for all your help. If there's ever anything I can do to repay you, please, don't hesitate.

[Oh geez, that's way too formal. Kirito glances from side to side, somewhat flustered, then awkwardly returns it with a slight bow and edges towards the door.]

Seriously, don't worry about it. I'll let you know when we can get things started for real. It was, uh, good to meet you?
