[Hux glanced up when he heard someone approaching, his expression guarded. He knew Fingon had approached him as a friend before but the Resistance pilot's overly dramatic history lesson had been seen by many people.

Not that he would deny what he had done, of course.

He wasn't exactly in the mood to get lectured today. He set his datapad carefully on the time as he looked up at Fingon.]

I'm well enough.

{Fortunately ~~or unfortunately~~ Fingon still has trouble remembering to pay much attention to the network, so he completely missed that lesson. So his cheer is honest and respectfully well meant.

Though he does notice Hux doesn't seem particularly happy, and that does concern him.}

[He's going to be brutally honest because he would rather avoid dancing around the issue if he could,]

[Hux watched him carefully for a moment, not sure whether he could believe that but he gave a nod after a moment.]

[Hux switched the datapad off, setting it on the table carefully.]

{Fingon can't help the curious glance at the datapad but he won't ask.}

I didn't. I was exploring, looking for cloth to make more robes, and saw you sitting here.

[Hux couldn't help but stare at him for a few moments. He wasn't sure if he would ever understand the Elves.]

So you just decided to say hello? [It honestly confused him, especially after the pilot's post.]

Yes, is that not what people who have met do? {Yeah, that post Fingon's still ignorant of.}

Not without a specific purpose in mind. [Socializing in high command was not just to pretend to smile, drink coffee, and enjoy each other's company. There was always a reason for anything.]

I fear you may have been missing out. People are fascinating!

I never said people weren't fascinating, merely that just approaching someone for no purpose isn't exactly something that I'm in the habit of.

How else are you to learn much about them?

Observation can tell you a great deal about someone. [And so can interrogation, especially with a Force user who can turn someone's mind inside out. That's the best way to get to know someone on a truly personal level.]

For example, you're naive but still confidence enough to approach me. That either indicates you're foolish or you have enough confidence in whatever powers or skills you may possess. You may live in your own little world with little concern for what's around you but you're not entirely helpless, are you?

You've been in a position of authority but for some reason, perhaps some past trauma, you've chosen to set it aside to live in a world of cake and making friends.

He blinks a bit, surprised at just how accurate Hux is. But then he smiles, a bit wry. He already knows this Man is highly intelligent.}

Sweets and friends is a much better way of life. I am tired of leading, Hux. Here, I do not have to.

And hiding in a kitchen is the best alternative you could come up with? That's just running away and while I'm sure you've been able to fool yourself I wonder how long that will last.

[If anyone could sense a coping mechanism, it was Hux. Now that he knows he's on the right track he pushes his point home.]

Cake and friends isn't a life and you know that, in some way. No one can be that naive.

{If Fingon's bothered by this observation, it doesn't show.} I could stay on one of the worlds we pass. The trees would doubtlessly welcome me. Instead, I choose to live here and travel through space and all the strange stars. It is enough excitement for now. A bonus is that I have family to travel with me.

{It's more of a life than he'd expected. A breath, and he lets the comment go unsaid. A shrug.} I know it is no life. But for a time, it is an existence I am content to lead.

Are you? You are going around shoving cake at complete strangers no doubt in an effort to fool yourself that you're content.

[He's not expecting anything big from Fingon but he likes to pick at each weakness that he finds.]

You're using others, most likely your family as well, to delude yourself. It's a pathetic charade from someone who is supposed to be a leader.

{A faint frown, Fingon tilts his head a bit to one side.} I only offer cake to those who seem it might cheer them. And as I was assigned to be the cook of my ship, should I not try to feed those around me?

{He has a number of weaknesses, but he's aware of most of them.

Such as his family. He flinches, guilt touching his eyes before he hides it away.} I do what I must. The doing might not always be pleasant, I acknowledge that.

You're not the cook for the fleet, however.

So you're aware that you use them for your own benefit but I wonder if they are know that. Or perhaps you just say it's for their own good and hope they believe you.

[Brendol Hux may have been an awful parent but at least he had always been honest to a fault, Hux knew that without a doubt. He knew his father had used him, just has he had done in return. It worked for them.]
