[Another year for the Drift Fleet, another birthday for Beverly. She’s given up on trying to determine exactly how old she is - fifty seems a good enough compromise - but that does not mean she’s not going to celebrate. She’s had people she loves unexpectedly returned to her and that alone is worth celebrating.

So, after a bit of flying around the forested planet, she finds the perfect location for a little birthday brunch picnic, right on the edge of a grassy mesa, with one of the enormous fungus-trees providing some cool shade. A large blanket is set out with the finest smorgasbord the Blue Fish can offer: smoked t-rex meat, fresh fruit from the garden, pastries, and of course, syntheholic mimosas. People are of course free bring their own food as well. There are also a couple of decks of cards and poker chips, should anyone fancy a game. All in all, a it’s a very relaxed, casual atmosphere, simply a nice meal with close friends.]

I did. Me and Allen brought down a dinosaur, and she carted a load of meat off for her crew. Like, a LOT of meat. As in...a quarter of the freaking dinosaur a lot of meat.

[Beverly's eyebrows shoot up in surprise and she looks over to where Pinkie is happily trotting about and talking to other guests.]

I can't say I really know much about equine physiology but there must be some explanation.

Ugh. Why does it have to be magic.

It's more a matter of terminology than anything - doesn't mean there's not a scientific explanation behind it.

In my experience magic is pretty much the opposite of science. It doesn't have an explanation, it just is.

He's the one. He's capable of what I'm sure many here would call magic - he can make people or objects appear and disappear, transport us to other places, can even manipulate time itself - but all of those abilities, while certainly powerful, still have a scientific explanation - he's manipulating matter on a subatomic level. I have no doubt the magical abilities we see here in the fleet are accomplished through similar means.

But... in the end, it's how and why someone uses their abilities that matters most.

Well, yeah, any ability can be misused. Even knowing how to tactically win a battle or swing a sword or talk people into doing what you want. All of it can be used badly, if you want it to be that way.
