[Sam's very much subdued the day that Dean vanishes. If he reacts more viscerally to it, to knowing that this Dean was returning to his inevitable death at Sam and satan's own hands, nobody'd know it — he closes himself up in his room, keeps himself distant for a little while. It helps, because it also gets him away from those damned echoes that have begun to snowball. He's tried his best to ignore them, and with Dean suddenly gone... he doesn't trust himself to be anything but stressed at the sight.

Anyway. Um. Best to move forward, right...? Get back into things. Working at the bar keeps his mind busy, as does helping with the garden, and there's also helping with the weird messages from the planet, and — dammit, Sam, get back into things. Fake it 'til you make it. This too shall pass, if you pretend hard enough that you're fine. So he breathes in deep, breathes out, and addresses the fleet.]

My brother, Dean, um. Dean Winchester's left the fleet. I wasn't sure how many people knew him, but...

[A pause.]

Anyone want to talk? I could use something to keep me occupied. Your choice of topic, just shoot. I can be a pretty good listener, too.

[Help me get out of this funk, huh.]

I guess professional drifter is close enough to my job.

I, um. I'm a paranormal investigator. I lay spirits to rest and... solve murders?

[also I kill the monsters that kill people but shh hshhhh lets not hurt your heart so soon mr. pacifist]

Solve murders and help spirits be laid to rest? [Vash honestly looks impressed.] Well, you got me beat by an ile. I just went from town to town and took whatever jobs I could find. Dish washing, stable cleaning, body guard, or waitress. Or if I couldn't find work then sometimes I'd get lucky at Poker or lose the shirt off my back occasionally.

I really didn't do much to help anyone when I wandered.

[Also avoided getting shot at, but meh.]

Yep, like that.

[He raises his eyebrows.]

Really? You seem like you enjoy helping out, though. I bet you're just modest.

I like getting paid. I'm happy to help out in the kitchen if it means I can buy fresh food at the next planet we get to.

[And it eats up time. Working out, cleaning weapons, eating, and sleeping can only take up so much of a person's day.]

I wasn't solving crime or helping out the recently departed.

[A pause as Vash thinks about it for a moment.] Do you think we'd ever get a ghost on one of the ships?

[Sam actually tracks someone who isn't Vash for a moment — the black-haired woman, the one who seemed to gravitate around Vash. She seemed kind and soft and gentle, someone to really love. He wonders who she is to him.]

... It's possible. Ghosts can exist anywhere, in my opinion. Even space.

[Vash notices when Sam appears to be looking past him. He even turns to look behind him to make sure he shouldn't be getting back into the kitchen.

But no one appeared to be there. He looks straight through the woman smiling next to him.

He doesn't think much more of it, perhaps Sam had spotted a bug or something, and turns back towards him.]

Anywhere, huh? So where is the strangest place you've seen a ghost?

[His eyebrows rise.]

Dude... toilet.

Guy died on it, ended up haunting it.

[THE WORST CASE RIGHT.]

What? Really? Please tell me you're joking. [Vash isn't sure who he's more horrified for. The person who died on the toilet or the people who came after.] Oh man, that is definitely high up on the list of last places I want to die at.

[A laugh.]

Yeah? Well, unfortunately, I've seen ghosts haunt just about anything.

In my world, they need someone or something to tether to, in order to stay among the living. A ring, or their corpse, or a house... something with a deep attachment.

A deep attachment, huh?

So have you see a ghost haunt something out of love? I know I've heard a lot of heh, well, ghost stories about angry spirits.

Oh, definitely.

Love makes people do crazy things. Sometimes people don't want to move on.

But... It's not a good idea; ghosts, they'll eventually lose who they are if they linger.

Really? [But, hopeless romantic thoughts of staying with your loved ones until they are ready to move on with you!] Like they forget who they were? Even if they weren't a bad person when they were alive?

[HE WANTS TO BE A HOPELESS ROMANTIC OKAY!?]

[He smiles sympathetically.]

That can make them last longer as a peaceful ghost, but...

[Usually, you'll turn into something horrible. Or forget who you are.]

I've seen ghosts do some incredible things. Not all of them bad. But I like to think... that being at rest is easier for them. It's got to be exhausting, fighting to stay who you are.

Well, don't most move one when their loved ones join them?

[He doesn't sound overly confident. More hopeful.]

Usually. Problem is they have a hard time waiting, so they try to murder them.

... The thought is there.

Ohhh... Well. That's not good.

[Maybe not understatement of the year, but maybe month?]

Good thing there are people like you out there helping to put ghosts to rest. You know, before showing up here I probably would have never believed in ghosts.

No? You never wondered if some people linger after death?

[He smiles a bit, humored and interested - it's always fun to get everyone's opinions on things he's spent his whole life staying quiet on.]

I've heard heh-hehehe, ghost stories from people of haunted places back home, but I've stayed in some of those houses and haven't been haunted. I always had the idea that when people died they would automatically go meet their loved ones in a land of angels of some sort.

[It's what Rem believed at least so Vash believes it as well.]

[Sam's smile turns fond.]

Pretty close, where I'm from. There is a heaven - ran by angels.

I know it's crazy to believe, but I actually got to see old friends who passed. It's not the worst place to be, Heaven; kind of too quiet sometimes, but... not so bad. I won't be too bummed about dying if I get a ticket punched there on the way out.

R-really? You did? [He doesn't look like he's doubting or anything. More excited than anything.] I don't know, I think it being too quiet sounds pretty nice to me. That's what I'd like at least, a nice quiet and peaceful life. [More so if he could spend that life quietly with Rem.]

I'm glad you were able to see your friend again. I'm assuming that getting to see people after they've passed away isn't something that normally happens then?

[Sam could just mean that most people he's spoken too on the fleet would find it hard to believe. Or it's rare in his world as well.]

[He chuckles, shaking his head.]

Not normally, no. It's all a... perk of the job?

[Granted, having so much death in their lives is because of the job.]

You have people you'd like to see again, huh?

[Vash smiles softly and if he could see the echo next to him he would have probably pointed to Rem. In response the echo smiles with a soft: "Oh Vash," as she starts hum. "I miss you too."]

Yeah, there's a few people I hope I'll be able to see once more in the end. [Although he's not sure he deserves to be in the same place someone as perfect as Rem has gone.] Although I think just about everyone has people they'd like to see again.

Getting to see them again early doesn't sound like too bad of a job perk.

[He smiles back.]

And. Um. I kind of... see things around people, lately.

I guess you could call it some kind of power.

See things around people? [Vash isn't sure what Sam means.] Like, an aura or something?

[That's something a paranormal investigator might have. Or at least sounds like something they might have.]

Erm... No. Like - images of things. Mostly from their lives.
