[It's in the kitchen where McCoy stumbles across Kai. He sympathizes with the sentiments about the food, by the way, but it's the coffee that draws him this time.]

Yep. [He props his hip against a counter, cradling his coffee in both hands.] Doctor Leonard McCoy. I've only been on board a week or so.

Kai Gracen.

[Kai ponders for a second then opts not to offer his hand out, since the doctor's hands are occupied.]

There anything around that's actually edible?
notanoptimist: (drink's on me)

[personal profile] notanoptimist 2016-11-13 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[He nods once, his version of 'nice to meet you,' before he snorts at the question.]

It's edible. It's just not very pleasant.
halfbloodhatchling: (consideration)

[personal profile] halfbloodhatchling 2016-11-13 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It's only edible if I can manage to choke it down.

You said you're a doctor, right? You don't need to worry about me if I get injured.

[ Kai is too used to human doctors refusing to treat elfin to hold it personally. ]
notanoptimist: (not computing)

[personal profile] notanoptimist 2016-11-14 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
[That certainly wasn't what he expected to hear. McCoy raises a brow, lowers the coffee cup he'd been about to take a sip out of.]

That's not the first thing potential patients usually say to me.

Most hospitals aren't equipped for elfin, in my experience, and if it isn't going to kill me than I can probably heal from it.

[ Yeah, breaking bones again when they heal wrong is a pain, in the literal sense, but when it's what needs to be done then he'll deal with it. ]
notanoptimist: (i may throw up)

[personal profile] notanoptimist 2016-11-14 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Most hospitals don't have me. [He snorts, takes a sip of his coffee. Elfin's a new one, but... Well. The Federation isn't exactly lacking in non-human.] Doesn't mean I can't help. I'll learn what I don't know so don't give that load about not being equipped.
halfbloodhatchling: (seriously?)

[personal profile] halfbloodhatchling 2016-11-14 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
[Kai lifts an eyebrow, leaning back against the wall.]

Wasn't really expecting can't. I'm expecting won't.

I heal quickly, so usually it's as much a matter of making sure wounds heal cleanly or cutting out anything that shouldn't have been there. I can do that myself if I need to.

[and if he's not passed out. That usually adds some difficulty to the mix.]

No matter what, don't give me anything with iron in it.
notanoptimist: (i told you not to do the thing)

[personal profile] notanoptimist 2016-11-15 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
[Cue a brow furrow. 'Won't?' That's a word that says a hell of a lot, in McCoy's (oh-so-humble) opinion.]

I'm a doctor. That means I treat who needs it. [It's a touch harsh, as if he's personally insulted by the insinuation that he wouldn't. (He's not.)] What else should I know?
halfbloodhatchling: (arrogant)

[personal profile] halfbloodhatchling 2016-11-15 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Magical healing is more common with my people, but I don't recommend that for me.

[Being rejected by both healers and doctors is a life he's used to. At least the healers have a good reason, since he tends to make their skin crawl.]

I don't think there's anything else. Not sure what all medication works on me, but alcohol's fine as a painkiller.
notanoptimist: (i've a thought)

[personal profile] notanoptimist 2016-11-16 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
I tend to keep a bottle of something handy anyway. Never know when you might need it. [Purely for medicinal purposes. Purely. Completely.]

Why wouldn't I use what normally works on your people on you? [Not even gonna touch that 'magical' thing. He's pretty sure there are rational explanations for most things, but that's not an argument he wants to get into either way.]
halfbloodhatchling: (back)

[personal profile] halfbloodhatchling 2016-11-16 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I take it there are ways to get that for general use too?

[ Though given the state of the food, maybe that's a poor assumption. ]

I'm not normal elfin. Doesn't really matter until you go expecting a healer to deal with me. I'm not imagining you'd use magic anyway, so it doesn't matter.
notanoptimist: (Default)

[personal profile] notanoptimist 2016-11-18 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, there are ways. As long as I have ways to keep it stocked, it's available. [Sometimes, he needs a bit of 'medicine' to get through a night.]

Uh, no. Purely conventional medicine for me.
halfbloodhatchling: (consideration)

[personal profile] halfbloodhatchling 2016-11-20 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
There ya go. There anything else you need to know?

[Kai's face is unfriendly enough to indicate that a 'yes' isn't what he's looking for right now.]
notanoptimist: (heaven help me)

[personal profile] notanoptimist 2016-11-21 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
[Yeah, he sees that.] I'll let you know if there's anything we didn't cover when you're injured on my table.
halfbloodhatchling: (consideration)

[personal profile] halfbloodhatchling 2016-11-21 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Let's hope we all remain uninjured.

[It's a good hope, at least.]
notanoptimist: (doctoring lemme be)

[personal profile] notanoptimist 2016-11-22 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
That's something I hope for every day.
