[ the video feed turns on to a child, no more than ten. he doesn't say a word at first and spends a few minutes curiously poking and prodding, shuffling the communication device around. he opens his mouth wide and the camera gets a nice view of his tonsils.

there are more pokes and shuffling when it's his full face again. ] This is so new and weird, it must be from the Core. I've never seen anything like this before...!

[ he yells into it. ]

Hello! Is this thing working? Where is this ship heading?

[ ACTION; on paisley ]
[ he has to be very quiet. and he's good at being quiet. he's snuck around watto so many times now, sneaking around is practically a honed skill. it's really cold here, though, and he's not used to that at all.

as he makes his way through paisley, he tries to find the warmest spot on the ship. he bumbles through the kitchen quietly, trying not to get caught by anyone that might be in there. and he eventually ends up finding the crew rooms. he doesn't know who's is who's. all he knows is he's in space, onboard a ship traveling in space! off tatooine! he enters the first room and wraps himself in the blankets found there. hopefully no one misses their blankets.

he takes off with the makeshift wrap and works his way through the rest of ship, making quiet pitstops here and there. he marvels at the pilot station, gawks at the engineering lab a bit then scurry quickly to the cargo bay where it's big and spacious and no one could possibly find a kid there. ]

[ he looks uneasily at obi-wan but follows along ]

Can I pilot? I'm a good pilot too, you know.

. . . Maybe not just yet.

Aw, man.

[ have a sulky nine year old ]

[ He's already lived through this so he barely pays it much attention until they arrive at the shuttle and head towards the tiny waystation. ]

[ he falls behind, looking at this thing or another. but once they're out there, he's glued to the windows. ]

Whoa. [ then he's zoned in on the actual controls of the shuttle, hovering at obi-wan's shoulder. ] What does that do? Is that the flight computer? It looks weird.

It's certainly a little primitive, but it does the job.

[ He tilts his neck so Anakin can see. ]

Not close to the Imperial starfighters though. This one only has basic navigation.

[ he leans against the headrest of the pilot seat and peeks over on his tip toes ]

Is that what the Jedi flies?

[ It takes a moment to realize why that question was strange. He's been fighting the war for so long, it's hard to remember differently. ]

Sometimes. The Republic often works hand in hand with us.

Oh. [ he huffs and it ruffles the top of obi-wan's head ] What's the Republic-- What being a Jedi like?

[ Ah. He pauses deliberately. ]

It's . . . hard to put into words. A Jedi serves the greater good. Often at the expense of himself.

[ he looks a bit confused ] What does that mean?

It means it's a lot of work for other people. And as a Jedi, you don't get to fulfill some of the . . . more personal things you might want.

[ To put it mildly. It's strange talking to Anakin like this. He wasn't Obi-Wan's padawan, so he feels the need to avert the harsher truths. Yet, he's not inclined to lie to him. ]

It means you have to spend all your time helping others and not getting to help yourself. The Order always supports each other, but there is a Code we all obey.

[ he doesn't understand that pause. but obi-wan is pleasant, and his voice slow and patient ]

I like helping others. There aren't enough of that in the outer rim. Hey, maybe you can come to Tatooine with me!

Later, perhaps.

[ He has an inkling as to why and what Anakin would like him to do there. ]

Right now, we have a nebula to see.

[ He finally docks at the waystation, activating the door. ]

[ he'll remember that, because it sounds like a promise. anakin trails behind and at the comment about their next activity, he wished his mother was here. again. ]

Do you miss your mom when you're out in the galaxy? In wild space?

No. I never had a mother. But there were people I missed out there.

[ Obi-Wan tugs his cloak closer as he keeps walking, slow enough for Anakin to keep up. ]

My best friend doesn't have one either. [ but kitster's always been able to take care of himself ] He's going to be so bummed he didn't get to see this.

Then you had better tell him all about it.

He's not going to believe I met an actual Jedi, either.

[ he paused for a moment and rubs his hands together ]

I'm going to tell him the Jedi help people, and they fly Imperial starships. And-- Hey, you don't have a lightsaber! Did you lose it?

I didn't lose it.

[ Though the loss rankles even now. ]

The place we were at doesn't allow lightsabers. So they're kept somewhere else.

[ he blinks. it sounds a lot like they took it from obi-wan ]

Then let's go find it!

Later, Anakin. The stars come first. I'm sure my lightsaber will wait for me.

[ he looks maybe a tad disappointed ]

Oh, alright. But I can help, right?

[ but he's nine and easily distracted so he glues himself to the viewport when they arrive and makes all sorts of ooohs and ahhhs ]

They missed you too, you know. I think I would miss you, when I'm back on Tatooine.

[ he looks up, wide eyed at the hand. his smile spreads wide ]

You're very nice, Obi-Wan Kenobi. I wish there were more of you in the galaxy.
