[There's a few moments of silence and low humming as the speaker figures out how this whole communicator thing works. There's a quiet "Ah!" and then the message begins. The voice is either a low pitched female or a higher pitched male, and there is little in the way of images to make it clear which is which. Fun times.]

I really wonder who would find it that fascinating to watch other people live their lives, but I suppose in space [That is still SO weird to say] you must not get a lot of other entertainments. I've read the guide on your network, buuuuut, well. It's a little dry, don't you think?

So why don't you tell me what would you say is the most important thing to know about being here? For example, this "e-lec-tri-city" thing is very useful. It's nice to be able to see so well, even if it's very, very bright all the time. And this little pocket communication thing is cute. What do you think?

[Once he's out from the bathroom he got locked in - thanks Handsome Jack - Okita spends some time acquainting himself with his new ship. Aka, he spends time slinking around and finding all the weird nooks and crannies in which he can hide stuff, himself, or possibly...other "stuff" in case it's necessary. Crewmates can find him anywhere on the ship wearing a white kimono and opening up vents and peering under cabinets, tapping on wall panels and trying to break into places he probably shouldn't go. All of this before he ever introduces himself, because hahaha manners.

It's hard to say! I haven't been here very long, either, so there's a lot that I'm still trying to work out. But, maybe ... [ Another hum, accompanied by the sounds of clattering metal – and then a crash, and a squeaky yelp. ] Oh, crap! Sorry – uh, what was I saying?

For me, learning how to use the shuttles was one of my top priorities.

[ The crash and clatter are a little alarming. He blinks at the communicator and then speaks tentatively.]

[ A … A craftsman? Aoko can't help it – she giggles. ]

Kind of? But, uhm, not exactly. Not unless you count rice ball animals as crafting. [ There's another shuffle, metal on metal, and the soft rustle of cloth. ] But, since I got drafted in as my ship's engineer, I thought I'd better learn a thing or two.

[ There's a beat, and then: ]

I'm making mechanical cats.

[That. Is the cutest idea ever!!!!!! He wants rice ball animals!!!! Not so much mechanical cats because he and cats don't get along so well, but rice ball animals!!!]

So you're an engineer and the cook? Fascinating!

I'm not the ship's cook—that's somebody else's job—but back – uhm, before I came here, I used to cook for my team.

[ She laughs again, fuller this time, bright and warm. ]

Space station. [He says it like he's committing the word to memory. ]

[ … Oh! Aoko audibly perks up. ]

Soujirou-san is Japanese, as well? [ There's no way he could be from her Japan, or at least, not from her period of time. But it's an exciting thought anyway. ]

Yes, I am. Is it unusual here? Everyone seems to be asking me about it.

Unusual might not be the right word for it … [ She hums, as much thoughtful as she is cheery. ] There are people from all over, here.

It's just, I couldn't even tell you how long it's been since somebody last used an honorific with my name! It might sound weird, but I've missed it.

[He doesn't appear to mind the laughter, just smiling through it. Whatever he said stuck a chord with her, and that's all he needs to know for now.

His smile brightens the instant she mentions sweets.]

Do you have any? I haven't had any decent sweets since I arrived.

Do I ever! [ Her sweet tooth is a thing of legend. ] I've been stocking up.
