[ Kubo wakes up with a jerk, fumbling around before he realizes it's not dark. The fire isn't lit and — this wasn't the cave he grew up in. Groping around, Kubo felt the solid presence of his shamisen, the two strings intact and breathes a sigh of relief. Then he carefully slips off the bed, slinging it over his back. With his one eye, he looked around. And pinches himself. ]

Okay. Not dead. Where am I? This isn't the Heavens . . . is it?

[ He had been sure everything had been settled, but Kubo hadn't exactly had time to learn the exact nature of what lingers above. ]

Daily life can be busy enough without trying to tell it in song.

True. But everyone has their downtime. It's important, that. Taking time to sit back and relfect and whatnot.

[ Everything happened so fast. ]

[ Kubo can't help making a face. ]

[The demon chuckles. ]

[ He certainly doesn't feel like one anymore. ]

Suppose you're not. You're the kind who's seen too much to really call yourself that any more, hmm?

[He knows the type. ]

[ His eye doesn't narrow but it's a near thing. ]

How can you tell?

I've been doing this kidnappy other world gig for about seven, eight years now. I've come to know the look. Plus whenever a kid says "I'm not a kid" in a tone that's not obnoxious and whiney, they tend to have been through some shite.

[ Kubo's quiet for a few moments. ]

It's just the end of a story. That's all.

Good that you call it the end of 'a' story, rather than the end of 'yours'. From what I've experienced, one ends and another one begins right after it- or sometimes right in the middle of it. Never really an end and that's it, right?

Only if it's being told.

[ Otherwise they'll fade away. Like what happened with his father. ]

But you're right. There is no end, not yet.

Hm well, I suppose those do need to end some time. People need to sleep and whatnot.

[He worked really hard for THAT much. ]

Is that what people hope for?

From what I've seen of people, yeah. It's generally important to them. Hope in general, actually.

I don't think hope is something I look forward to.

I guess I'm not sure what to hope for.

Oh. Well, that's easy. You just take baby steps. Learn to hope for the small things first, before moving to the bigger ones.

Like, I dunno. Hope for a sunny day, or a certain meal you enjoy. Work up from there.

[ He nods. ]

People hope for sunny days?

Of course. People who like to sit in the sun. Gardeners, beach-goers. Those sorts.
