[Crowley pulls a face, he clearly doesn't approve. ]

Well, that's just bullshit. It's not their place to control who you mother loves, no matter how high and bloody mighty they think they are.

[shamisens]

Does it matter?

[ It's kind of late at this point. ]

[onlyanapple]

Of course it does. I mean- okay, sure, those kinds never really listen, so you might as well be screaming into the wind, but fuck them. They don't get to decide anything. Much less something like love.

I bet they could stomp and scream all they liked, and no matter how it ended- which from your expression I'm guessing isn't good- did they actually manage to stop your mother loving your father? Did they make those feelings go away?

[shamisens]

[ Kubo knows that. He knows he'll carry the story of his parents. It'll live on through him and through the people he meets. It'll never fully end. But it was an end. And it came so swiftly. ]

Just because the feelings didn't go doesn't mean everything else didn't.

[onlyanapple]

...I suppose that's true. They can kill you, make you not exist- but they can't make things go their way. They can't alter other's feelings- their choices. That's more important than anything. Being able to choose for yourself. Because no matter how it all ends, you still got to choose.

[shamisens]

[ Kubo knows that and agrees. The choices are important. Being human is important as well. But he finds himself rebelling all the same, the core of hurt and anger close to his chest. ]

That's easy to say when you haven't ended.

I don't get to end, so that one's out of my hands, kiddo.

But yeah, I suppose it is easy to say. But would you have rather your mother relented? Could you say she would be the same woman you have such pride in if she'd chosen instead to heed her family's wishes?

[shamisens]

Stop talking about her like that! My mother is dead!

[ His feelings boil over. It's too much to hear what kind of person his mother was from a stranger. ]

You can't talk about her like you know her! Because no one knew her! We lived in a cave, we hid ourselves all our lives! You don't know her story. So stop acting like you do.

[onlyanapple]

[The thing with Crowley is that he really doesn't treat children like children. It usually endears him to youngsters quite well, when he treats them like their opinions matter, like they're adults. But times like this, he oversteps- and he forgets that he's talking to a kid who lost his mother.

He winces, raises his hands up. ]

Alright. Fair point. I'm sorry.

[shamisens]

[ Kubo clenches his hands, shaking in anger and other unnamed feelings that feel hot in his chest. He has mourned, in his own quiet way. He knows what his parents sacrificed and why. Kubo could list all the reasons because he felt them as he looked his grandfather in the eye and refused to budge.

None of them seem to help right now, so far away from home. None of them seem to make him feel better, just alone in this strange sea of grief and certainty. ]

[Crowley hesitates for a moment, because he's not really sure how to fix this. This is so far out of his depth, he can't see the bottom of the swimming pool any more.

Also the swimming pool is on fire. ]

Um. Do you need a chocolate bar or something?

[shamisens]

[ Finally he looks up. ]

You've...never had chocolate before?

...Right. Well. We'll have to try and find you one, then.

[shamisens]

Why?

[onlyanapple]

Because you need to try it. You'll thank me for it one day.

[shamisens]

[ He's not sure of that. ]

I guess.

[onlyanapple]

You will, I promise. Everyone likes chocolates. I'll let you know when I dig some up.

[ Kubo disbelieves but the change of topic has the tension in his body dissipating. ]

Are they hard to find?

[onlyanapple]

[Crowley's glad for that. He hasn;t completely fucked this up, yay!]

You know, I'm not entirely sure. I've never really had to hunt it down before.

Where would you normally get it?

[onlyanapple]

A shop, usually, or a vending machine. At least that's where you get them on Earth.

[shamisens]

[ Kubo mouths the words vending machine since he's never heard of it before. ]

But we're not on Earth.

[He has much to teach you, young one. ]

Well, no, but we can get lots of things we're only supposed to get on Earth around here, so it stands to reason chocolate will be one of them.
